Museum IV (Age of the Reptiles)
My dinosaur paintings are never intended to be the sort of images that Mr Spielberg might come up with. I want them to depict an entire environment that happens to feature dinosaurs. This is the reason for the seemingly arbitrary cropping of the models on display.
As a friend pointed out, there’s a doubling of depiction at work here- and indeed all of my museum paintings. Museums are about removing objects from their context and presenting them for us to examine. Paintings also do this. In my work I’m re-presenting objects in their museum context- rather than just simply painting the objects, themselves.
In the end, the paintings almost become about the act of looking.
