I was very lucky to get this photo this evening… still tired from a couple of all nighters running around Melbourne with my camera, I nearly decided not to head out at all tonight. I was nearly able to justify staying home when the sky went overcast at home later in the afternoon… however, as the deadline for departure for Elwood loomed, I found some motivation somewhere deep down inside and off I went.

The traffic was extremely heavy on the way down there, and I arrived at the northern end of Elwood Beach only a few minutes before sunset. Upon arrival, I was greeted with an amazing scene: a detailed cloudscape above calm waters, with the sun hidden behind a cloud and casting long rays of light up into the sky. Having never been to Elwood Beach before, I didn’t realise that the derelict jetty I was there to shoot was situated further south. So I found myself sprinting along the walkway there, dodging cyclists and couples out for their evening stroll, in a bid to get on location in time to catch the amazing sunset.

I admit that I missed capturing the sun’s rays of light splaying outwards from the edges of the cloud that it was hiding behind. However, there were plenty more opportunities for amazing photographs as the sun continued to set behind the detailed cloudscape… like this one!

For those interested in the technical details: three exposures (+/-2ev) captured using a Canon EOS 450D were used to generate HDR in Photomatix Pro, which was then corrected/enhanced using Lightroom, Photoshop and Topaz Adjust.

Nice work, the colours are magnificent

  • Thanks, Artbenco… I was a little worried that I pushed the saturation too far in post-processing, so it was good the hear that someone else thought the colours were magnificent :)
