Watercolour on d’Arches watercolour paper.
12" X 18".
Proud Mary was painted when I was starting out in watercolours in the mid eighties.
At the time I was focused on realism and immersed myself in the joys of playing with textures, contrasts, light and negative space and with the challenge of trying to reproduce images which I went about photographing.
The image was painted from a photograph which I took at the annual Sannich Fair on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It is one of an old steam engine, a fact which was irrelevant the time. I just loved the lines and colours and the contrasts that the fall light cast on the painted and rusted metal.
