great shot, Jared! is the high ISO mandatory for getting enough light on the star trails?

  • Jared Revell replied

    thanks mate !
The maximum shutter is 30sec for the continual burst mode without having to press the shutter manually over the hour, so I found that using ISO 800 was a reasonable trade off. I do get noise, but apply noise reduction before layering them.
Ideally, it would be great to shoot at a lower ISO and set the shutter longer.
You could use a lower ISO, but then you’d have to bump up your exposure during post processing to get the light you want.
I’ve also seen some people use ISO 400, but I’m not sure what post work they did.

  • Jim Worrall

    Jim Worrall

Great stuff Jared, ...very nice indeed.
Just FYI there’s a timer/controller for the 40D called a Canon TC-80N3 that allows you to use the camera’s bulb mode to get exposures longer than 30 seconds and also take multiple shots.
It’s a good way to get away from the higher ISO settings for these star trail shots.

  • Jared Revell replied

    thanks Jim :-)
thanks for the info….it would be nice…if only it was a little cheaper.

This is your best startrail shot yet Jared. Well done.

  • Jared Revell replied

thanks Lindsay ~ this way my 2nd one (first one you’ve seen with the tree)
I’d love to do more, but I’m worried about them getting boring or the mundane, but I suppose the foreground makes a difference.
    any thoughts ?

  • Lindsay Knowles

    Lindsay Knowles

Startrails are like lightning shots. You could never get bored of taking them and looking at them. I find this time of the year not a very good time to take startrails as the sky is always hazy. Around easter is the time.
Keep them coming Jared. We all love looking at them

  • Jared Revell replied

cool ~ thanks mate, i’ll keep taking them then :-)
I did notice there was a lot of haze in the air while up at the Horn.
I’m planning on waiting till it gets a bit cooler and daylight savings ends and try one over the bay.

  • Crystal Williams

    Crystal Williams

I never once thought to just keep taking the picture with a 30sec exp. I never understood how people do it for 10mins. Is that all there is to it or is there actually a way to set it that long?

    Beautiful shot, btw. :)

  • Jared Revell replied

    Hi Crystal,
If you have a special remote to set exposures longer than 30secs you could set it the length you choose.
The way I did this was in continuous burst mode, so it shot every 30secs.

  • Crystal Williams

    Crystal Williams

This is awesome Jared! I have a question though, how come you (and others I’ve seen) use multiple 30 second exposures rather than setting the camera to bulb for a long time?

  • Jared Revell replied

    Hi Joel, thank you :-)
It’s to do with heat build up in digital camera sensors which is caused by long exposures. I’ve written an informative blog post here which you may find useful.
