Path To The Wormhole
My first star trail attempt.
While at the Grampians for a few days with family, Neil and I headed out to Lake Fyans after our sunset shoot to do some star trail shots. It was really peaceful and relaxing out there, very surreal.
Even though we were on hardly any sleep, finishing off at 1:30am, and having to be up at 5am the next morning, I think this was worth it. I’ll definitely be trying this again.

Raquel Bourne
WOW Jared, that’s amazing, I’m going to have to learn how to do this!
Jared Revell replied
thanks Raquel !
Carmelh
So lovely Jared….guessing need your wide angle lens and a tripod for this…amazing results
Jared Revell replied
thanks Carmel :-)
tripod, yes
wide angle…the wider it is the more stars you’ll get, but you’d be able to do it with your lens, I think
Dharna
Just waiting for the event horizon to connect.
Thanks for the details on how you did this Jared. I have heard that leaving the shutter open for a long length of time to achieve this effect is not good for digital cameras. Things overheat. Nice to see that there is a way around this. Great capture.
Jared Revell replied
haha ~ now that would be a shot !
thanks Dharna, and no worries :)
Barbara Brown
Truly amazing!

Looks great Jared. Well done. It a fair bit of work these days to do startrail shots.Back in the day I use to do up to 10 hr exposures.
Did you lock the remote to let it take a shot every 30 secs or did you do it manually with the remote?
Jared Revell replied
thanks mate :-)
just about to head out…good timing
I set the drive mode to burst and held the remote shutter down for 5 seconds, and then it continues to shoot until I press it again (an hour later) to stop
Hans Kawitzki
Great image Jared and thanks for your details…......how did you know in which direction to point your camera ?
Jared Revell replied
thanks Hans
having a compass does help, but Neil showed me a cool way to find the south celestial pole using the Southern Cross.
You can also do it using the Magellanic Clouds.
I’ll put together a journal on my blog and let you know when it’s done if you like.
Lindsay Knowles
Thats what I was hoping you were doing.(its so easy) I recently gave a talk at our local camera club about startrails and how to do it the old school way and the new way. There is a program you can use and also the Photoshop way to put them together.
Lindsay Knowles
Hans I carry a compass in my camera bag. Its the never fail way.

Awesome effort. Hope you used an electronic timer (not sitting there freezing with a stopwatch)!
Jared Revell replied
thanks Michael !
yeah, the camera was in burst mode, so I only had to press it once to start it off, sit back and relax for 1 hour and then a 2nd press to stop.

Jared … this is ‘starspectacular’ .... like ‘spectacular’!
Woah …. and to think we lose all this cause of Big City living and the $$$$$$ curse.
I need camping equipment …. my camera and my thoughts on a tripod!

the stars are just amazing out in the country.

Rachel McKinnie
Insanity!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is so cool. I tried once (I guess the old school way) in April of last year, and my battery died halfway through the night, so I ended up with a pink picture with barely recognizable landscape features :(
Guess I’m going to have to try out your way!
Jared Revell replied
~ thanks Rachel !! :-)
bummer….was your battery fully charged ?
Joel Hall
Very cool Jared! 114 shots x 30 seconds = tiring!

Superb first star trail! I can see a great use for a programmable timer remote shutter release now, considering how it seems you made each exposure manually. Your patience rewarded you and us well.
Jared Revell replied
Hi Frank,
thanks ! :
))the camera was in burst mode and I just pressed the remote shutter once and sat back for an hour and relaxed :
I added a link in the description to my blog post which contains all the details.
