Film Photography Group by Jared Poole

Posted on October 01, 2007

I’d just like to add a few little things which I feel we should all abide by:

1. The obvious ‘no digital’ rule… Images which have been scanned from the original film/print and digitally corrected (contrast/brightness/etc, but nothing more) are acceptable. Also make sure you comply with RedBubble’s rules and guidelines. It would also be appreciated if the subject of journal entries focused on film in one form or another.

2. No limit on artworks uploaded.

3. Please try and keep it friendly… Constructive criticism is encouraged, but it is recommended this be done through Bubblemail.

If anyone disagrees with these, or I have rejected a film piece which you can prove (in any way possible) is genuine, feel free to contact me, either via Bubblemail or comment here. Remember this is a group which is for both showing off your own work and helping others improve… Hopefully we’ll all get a little better.

Thanks,

Jared

Great Idea for a group my friend. How are you going to weed out digital posts that have been effected to simulate film grain?

That’s a good question, J.K… I’m hoping people will be honest when they submit work… For the mean time, I’ll have to have a ponder and ask around… You wouldn’t happen to know a way would you? =)

An thanks Derid, I think it will be =)

    Hi
Just a line to say hello, Jared how do you feel about the opinion, that once you scan a photograph it then becomes a digital image.

Hi Jared, good idea for a group, the origin of the species has to be a negative but Carl has got a good point – I mean, it has to be a digital image to upload it…doesn’t it? I suppose as long as we start with the best intentions and don’t (digitally) mess with it too much. – JK’s question is the real killer – perhaps you could squeeze them till the pixels show…

Okay, I forgot about checking this entry… Sorry!

But yeah, as long as the photo was originally film, it’s fine.

And I’m still pondering on J.K’s question… It is a bit of a pain… Though squeezing sounds fun…

Once the slide or negative is scanned as a digital image it will be treated like any other digital image. I have noticed that slides do tend to give greater contrast than I would normally like after they are scanned. I usually decrease the contrast and burn it to DVD or move it to an external drive. The gold disk are placed in a small safe where they cannot be handled. The amount of space on the DVD will help in the decision of how large a file you may want on the disk or drive. I usually save 16×20′s on a 320 gig drive, but as I shoot a lot of street photography/journolism my files tend to be smaller around 8×10. I had a major crash w/ one of my drives and use a film camera for a backup. My work is film based and will need to be converted to larger files at a later date. If you want really big files only 4 will fit on a disk!!!

    Ah film people "Greetings ",

Nice to see you derid, and thanks for your wonderful comments.
Gideon..most labs do a 24mg that should do… Costs rise dramatically after this.
You could get a scanner, good ones are amazingly cheap now.

And thanks to the people who are getting this together !!!
