Social Intercourse

THE MAN SITS IN his rags on his daily bench. Engulfed in sound. Flutter of wings, murmur of distant children, static of the city. His eyes wide, unseeing, aimed steadfast ahead.

The woman sits opposite him, a fountain of shimmering wishes dividing. She is there to be seen, eyes dart at passing faces, measuring. A mountain of man beside her, possessing her, scanning the crowd for potential intruding prowess.

Seated there, aching to be seen, gawked, she notices a loathsome looker, unworthy, his eyes unwavering, unblinking. A vile grin spreads on his face and her lips retreat in sneer.

Near the man a child thumbs a penny into the fountain. Just before the tell-tale splunk resounds, a secret whispered desire reaches keen ears and he smiles sweetly.

Alerted to the threat across the wishing pool, the neanderthal gestures a warning at the grinning cretin. Not a flinch from the man with the wayward eyes. With the first warning ignored, action must be taken, securing his alpha status.

Disgusted and bemired by the unfaltering eyes, she writhes out of the line of sight. His gaze remaining fixed, not following as she anticipated, her honor guard prematurely deployed.

The man’s idyllic day at the park is shattered by a flurry of crass words reaching his ears from a closing distance.

Threats not hindering or diverting the man’s eyes, he is left without choice. The offender must be dealt with.

A sickening wet smack resounds and searing pain explodes in the man’s unprepared face. Pale inert eyes close. He hears the patter of his blood between his feet as heavy footsteps depart.
