There's a moose loose around the . . . suburbs?
Our part-time gardener, pruning in the rain
Why hike for hours in the rain, searching for rutting bull moose, only to find a bull moose pruning bushes and tree in our ‘burb?
Thanks to Peter Davidson for the video on Hoots mon, there’s a moose loose aboot this hoose
D200 and Nikkor 18-200mm
About size and weight, wikipedia has this to say:
“On average, an adult moose stands 1.8–2.1 m (6–7 ft) high at the shoulder. Males weigh 380–720 kg (850–1580 pounds) and females weigh 270–360 kg (600–800 pounds).[7] The largest of all is the Alaskan subspecies (A. a. gigas), which can stand over 2.1 m (7 ft) at the shoulder, has a span across the antlers of 1.8 m (6 ft) and averages 634.5 kg (1,396 lbs) in males and 478 kg (1,052 lbs) in females.[8] Typically, however, the antlers of a mature specimen are between 1.2 m (3.9 ft) and 1.5 m (4.9 ft).”

Steve Buffington
A fav for me Jan. Great job.—Steve
Jan Timmons replied
They do keep the bushes trimmed, Steve. His ears weren’t pulled back at this point; too busy chewing.
Sharon Mau
It is a sensational shot Jan, he is magnificent!

Jan Timmons replied
Pretty cute, eh? Much better than the tiny dots we shot on the hike.
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you for the feature, Sharon. You’re so kind.
brimellor1
Wonderful shot!!
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Brian! Just lucky.
valzart
Amazing captures sweetheART ;} happy hippy hugglez
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you.
Rick & Deb Larson
Oh Jan this is an awesome ‘bull’ capture (we can tell he’s not inflatable). ♥ how you captured him … a FABULOUS capture indeed!! Take Care ~ Rick & Deb ~ ☺ OOPS … P.S. HUGE CONGRATS on your feature in Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams … well done my friend!!!
Jan Timmons replied
Cute, eh? Later he got grumpy and did that less cute thing with the ears. That’s gratitude—with a jaw full of our remaining foliage.
(That was a feature, already?)
Jan Timmons replied
Wouldn’t it be cool to have a lifelike inflatable half-a-moose?
Congratulations on your great grizzly!
Soxy Fleming
how nice to meet your pet …MOOSE?????
Jan Timmons replied
We didn’t name him, Soxy, as they’re not very loyal.
DonnaMoore
Oh my….Oh my…..A very big moose…..What a great photo Jan…..
Jan Timmons replied
And you—a beautiful fritillary, Donna! From the tiny to the large.
Richard Stanley
Wow – beautiful shot Jan – these guys are big aren’t they?
Jan Timmons replied
Loomed large from my height and weight, Richard. Howard’s, too.
Jan Timmons replied
About size and weight, wikipedia has this to say, Richard:
“On average, an adult moose stands 1.8–2.1 m (6–7 ft) high at the shoulder6. Aleksander
a very brave angle of view, Jan!
Jan Timmons replied
Actually, sort of a dumb and risky view, but I do love the beasts.
Béla Török
Excellent capture, my friend!
Jan Timmons replied
Béla, thanks!
Dusker
Not quite the thing (or size) of what we see in our back yard! Simply—gawd!
Jan Timmons replied
What? No roos in every yard? There goes that lovely myth.
Mary Ann Reilly
wow. what a shot:)
Jan Timmons replied
Mary, I consider this good luck after a fruitless-but-fun hike.
Martina Fagan
A stunning shot and a fav:))
Jan Timmons replied
Very kind of you, Martina!
SylviaHardy
What an amazing encounter and stunning capture!
artyfifi
Wow amazing capture! The moose looks wonderfully smug!
Barbara Burkhardt
SENSATIONAL!!!! What a shot Jan – B-)
Brian Carey
Looks like he is having a fine munch, great shot Jan!
Jan Timmons replied
I think they’re leery of humans as predators, but this guy never stopped munching, even when he moved from bush to tree. Thanks, Brian.
Georgie Hart
A spruce moose indeed and a wonderful capture of him behind the appealingly red leaves!
KatsEye
WOW JAN!!!!! You have totally out did yourself on this one. Gorgeous, beautiful and most superb!
Bev Woodman
Oh he looks so cute there amongst the flowers – this is a wonderful image and a very lucky find!♥ Moose delivered to your door … almost!
Karen Betts
He is fantastic love his colouring and how he is nuzzling into the berries. Well worth the walk and sometimes the most amazing things can be found on our door step.
OldBirch
Great shot, Jan. It looks like he is trying, unsuccessfully, to hide from the camera. Very nice shot!
Jan Timmons replied
Here’s my first digital shot next door in Sept. 1999, C. (Links to my website.)

WatscapePhoto
WOW Jan! Fantastic photo. Not sure ‘cute’ is appropriate though ;-) A definite fav!
Jan Timmons replied
I don’t know, Steven. There’s something alluring about the site of them, until they really draw their ears back, or until I see how fast those long legs can run!
Ken McElroy
Love it – colors and intimacy and wonderful in this capture despite the “civilized” setting.
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Ken. Lucky day. Here’s one from 1999 and my first Sony Mavica digital that saved to a floppy. It’s in the neighbor’s front yard. (Links to my website.)

Heather Rivet...
amazing well done
DawsonImages
Great eye contact, I have encountered these critters which can be ill tempered on my trips to Anchorage
KMorral
lol, that sounds about right- make all the effort to find you didn’t need to ! (I expect you had a nice walk though, despite the rain). What a couple of great captures, and a lovely poser for a model!
Al Bourassa
Gorgeous shot. A Fave.

Eivor Kuchta
Oh my, Jan, you must have been pretty close! Excellent capture, so sharp!
Pat Yager
An exceptional picture, Jan! You must have some pretty good tasting leaves! How close were you when you took his picture?
Lenka
This is wonderful, Jan!
What a great place you’re living in, I only saw a moose once, and it was in a reservation in Germany…
Donna Ridgway
love his wet spikey hair, glad he wasn’t in a bad mood!
LudaNayvelt
wow! Fantastic
Svetlana Sewell
Excellent capture!
PrairieRose
Superb capture!!!
Stephen Thomas
WOW! What a Great photo!
Bill Morgenstern
This eye to eye view is fabulous. The look up and “Leave me Alone attitude is perfect.
MaeBelle
Great shots,Jan, seems the moose are going into more populated areas, wonder if they know no-one can shoot them there???haha :o)) God bless,Mae
Jan Timmons replied
They’ve pretty much had the run of this town—their only danger here are vehicles. Some learn to look both ways! Thanks, Mae.
JUSTART
great shot
ilpo laurila
Really awesome capture, a fav.
Ritva Ikonen
Brilliant shot! Love the angle and details. Amazing really!
Nanagahma
Wow, what a nice “welcome home” surprise! This is amazing. I though seeing deer in the back of my yard in a rather populated neighborhood was amazing, but this takes the cake! Great shots!
Lisawv
Wow, he is so huge. Fantastic shot and great pov.
i l d i l a z...
Very lovely capture Jan!
DragonFlyer
STUNNING!!!!! Besides the fact that he’s in your front yard too…. It’s simply a wonderful image as well! I’m starting to think that living in Alaska may be pretty good after all… lol
K xx
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, K. Despite advance sales of our ex-governor, it is a pretty good place to be.

Ellen
Really very beautiful image Jan!
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you, Ellen. Quite a bit of difference between your tiny subjects and this heavyweight, eh? Do you think we could teach him to play a musical instrument?
urmysunshine
WHOA- this is wonderful!!!!!~ I love the peekabooness and the leaves contrasting with the cocoa brown- LOVe love Love it (and I would STILL love it even if I didn’t think moose were nerdy-cool) GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dusker
Sorry to explode the myth! We did have emus in the town though, does that make up for it. They, however, are not as splendid as your mate here.
Jan Timmons replied
Oh, emus definitely take the cake. They’re splendidly tall and gangly for a non-flying bird! I’m not sure gangly is a word, but you know what I mean.
Carol Barona
this is fantastic! what beautiful captures of a beautiful animal
Jan Timmons replied
Made a great and funny ending to a wonderful day. Thanks, Carol.
Jay Ryser
That’s MUCH better than a garden gnome! Where can I get one? Nah, on second thought it’s probably not allowed by my HOA.
Still, what a wonderful catch.
Jan Timmons replied
Clever man! Not as great as an elk bugling, Jay, but definitely better than a pink plastic flamingo, perhaps. Our HOA doesn’t even try to address moose and bear in the ‘burbs.
Still, part of my heart belongs to Colorado when I see your photos of RMNP atop some high peak.
Diane Schuster
Love the look, he’s gorgeous! How ironic to find him at home! Dee
Jan Timmons replied
My spouse (who took better photos) and I could only laugh while clicking. Thanks, Dee.
Janie Oliver
wow! what a shot.
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Janie.
PJS15204
Way to take advantage of a great situation Jan Fantastic shot instant fav!
Jan Timmons replied
We could only laugh and reach for the cameras, Paul. Great fun.
whalegeek
Way to go, Jan. This is one special image. Instant Favorite!
Jan Timmons replied
How nice! Not a breaching whale, though. I’ve still only seen halfhearted breaches in all this time.
Suzanne Chouinard
Nice capture and excellent angle and composition..
Jen Ryan
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you, Jen. An honor.
JennyDean
wonderful capture :)
Karen Tillotson
fantastic shot...well done Jan!!!!
Sandy Stewart
I agree, fantastic shot! : )
danielklaas
Love how it almost appears shy, and trying to hide behind the plants. The antlers might give it away though… :-)
Jan Timmons replied
I agree. Difficult to hide with those things on one’s head.
rodeorose
Great shot and what a funny story! Well done on your feature Jan!
Mountainimage
Either a long lens or a great deal of bravery needed here. Nice image.
TracyD
Wow wonderful capture!
Krys Bailey
He’s a beaut! What a wonderful shot!
greenstone
beautiful!!!!!!!!!!
autumngirl
LOL! This is a fantastic picture! Where in the world do you live, that you have moose runnin’ loose?? Heehee…..I’m grinning from ear to ear at this fellow, nuzzling the grasses and leaves!
lorilee
A wonderful capture!!!!!
Brandie1
Beautiful capture.
Sylvia Gonzales
LOL!! Isn’t he Gorgeous!!!!!!!! Awesome Capture! Congratulations on your Feature! Very well deserved!!! : ) peace, syl
Jan Timmons replied
He’s a cutie. I wish I could convey size and capture his perfect rack. Taller than my jeep, by far. Thanks, Sylvia.
Joanne Bradley
Amazing shot! Oh how I would love to get a moose with a great big rack like that! (Does that sound strange?) Great shot Jan!
Jan Timmons replied
I understand. Would look good in one of your recent foggy lake photos, with dripping long grass from his, er, mouth.) Your recent photos are gorgeous! Like your new avatar/profile pic, too. (At least it’s new to me.)
Cherax
I like that, he’s sniffing the flowers, getting in touch with his feminine side. Maybe mulling over the best aperture to them with.
Big animals if feeling grumpy. How careful do you have to be round them?
Jan Timmons replied
He’s not snuffling, he’s eating the hedge, Rod. But we love them.
Very, very cautious. More cautious than I was. I think Howard would happily put a leash on me, but he had my longer lens.
Crystal Zacharias
What an incredible photo! Much better than the ones of the moose I captured! Well done.
Jan Timmons replied
No comparisons, now. The last good opportunity I had was in 1999. I think many times it’s a matter of luck and timing. This was clearly luck!
Steve Sharp
There is something very endearing and cute about mooses (at least to those of us who don’t live amongst them… don’t know how they are perceived in your area!)
Jan Timmons replied
I agree. Love ‘em. They get right o’ way on the road, four-lane highway (we have one!) or hiking path. Sloppy gardeners, though.
Magdalena Mak...
Great shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Imber
Excellent work!
Jan Timmons replied
Imber, thanks. I looked through your entire porfolio yesterday with awe, but somehow “nice work” didn’t seem like an appropriate response for such imaginative work.
A.M. Ruttle
Heeeheeeheeeheee, glad to see you have the same “problem” we have, Jan!!!!!
Jan Timmons replied
It’s a “love/ oh darn, that was a newly planted aspen tree” type of relationship, eh?
A.M. Ruttle
p.s. You should put the focal length in your description so that folks can know HOW close you were!
Jan Timmons replied
Well, I’m not sure that 170mm, f/8, 1/60, ISO 200, and handheld against a rock gives a real indication of distance. Do you?
Gene Walls
Great shot, Jan! That’s a fantastic idea, just let the wildlife come to you! It won’t likely happen for most of us, but when your idea works, it’s truly awesome. I love your wonderful capture, no matter where you shot it!
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Gene. Now, if he’d just been next to one of the many “Moose Crossing” signs.
Roka
I love this shot, Jan. Wow! Love the story, too and other pictures. Not something we see ‘round here… that’s for sure. Maybe a squirrel or raccoon wandering through the yard, but that’s about it.
rubyred
What an amazing creature, we’ve nothing of his size where I live! Great image.
KarenKSmith
And he is a cutie! wonderful comp and great story Jan:)))
Mary Campbell
I voted for this in a challenge but never got over here to tell you what a great shot this was, I see everyone beat me to it!
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Mary. But I did not enter this in a challenge.
Jan Timmons
bevanimage
A fabulous capture, Jan; he’s posing so beautifully for you! Love those eyelashes (and the antlers of course).
reflector
An incredible find and an excellent shot ! Great foreground colours too.
Mary Campbell
You said you didn’t enter the moose in a challenge, I could of swore that I saw it there? Big mystery maybe someone has something similar? Oh well, great shot anyway.

Before he ate the plants, Jim.
nadine henley
what great successes for this challenge winner, jan! I see it has even displaced your beautiful tresses, at least temporarily. I bet it’s on the popular pages! (heh heh). Will go have a look for you. Oh, yes, great capure!
nadine henley
p3, 30 days! If it hadn’t been there, I would never have looked at those pages again!
Jan Timmons replied
DragonFlyer told me it was #1 on page 1 for several days. She swears she didn’t do it (some folks help RB search photos), so I don’t know how that happened. Now if only that equated to sales, I could retire early! You’re kind (and funny) to look, Nadine.
Brian Carey
Geez Jan how did I miss this one? This is lovely!
Jan Timmons replied
Love your moose too, Brian!
Patty Boyte
Sensational capture Jan!

Rick & Deb Larson
LOL Jan … looks like you have been pretty busy with this one, with some changes and additions since my last visit … this really is an awesome capture, and the inserted images … wow … those don’t look inflatable either (LOL). HUGE CONGRATS on your feature in the Woman Photographer group, well done!!! Take Care ~ Rick & Deb ~ ☺
Jan Timmons replied
He’s cute, isn’t he? Lucky timing after an unproductive hike. Thanks, Deb.

Fantastic capture

Fantastic shot. We went to Maine this summer to try to find a moose. We didn’t find a bull moose but we did see a cow and her calf in a shallow pond. It was a wonderful sight.

Oh my golly gosh!!! What a hoot!! (But the exercise did you good)
A great shot!!
The circumstances remind me of the shots of the koala in my bedroom!! Who needs to visit a National Park …. when some koalas, without paying their Council Rates, can reside in the suburb of Wattle Park.!!!

Beautiful shot !!
Deri Dority 24 days ago
Wow, I have to agree with all these comments. You framed him perfectly with the front bushes and the branch on the left. I love the POV and the fall colors. So much more effective than seeing the whole moose. The half hidden moose gives a certain amount of tension to the image. Very impressive.

WOW, you are so lucky, this is awesome.

ROFL at the moose loose about this hoose! Great shot, Jan!

The size of this mammal would be quite a surprise to walk upon. The moose grazing in the flowers is such a contrast with the size of the animal & the small flowers. A very peacful image. My mother has had a deer on her front porch and a bear tear up her trash
-they come closer in her region of VA is suffering a drought.PBWright about 6 hours ago
Holy Cow! I mean, Bull! Whatever! I don’t know how far from him you were but you were brave, regardless! Congrats on ALL the Features!
