There's a moose loose around the . . . suburbs?

Our part-time gardener, pruning in the rain
Why hike for hours in the rain, searching for rutting bull moose, only to find a bull moose pruning bushes and tree in our ‘burb?

Thanks to Peter Davidson for the video on Hoots mon, there’s a moose loose aboot this hoose

D200 and Nikkor 18-200mm

About size and weight, wikipedia has this to say:
“On average, an adult moose stands 1.8–2.1 m (6–7 ft) high at the shoulder. Males weigh 380–720 kg (850–1580 pounds) and females weigh 270–360 kg (600–800 pounds).[7] The largest of all is the Alaskan subspecies (A. a. gigas), which can stand over 2.1 m (7 ft) at the shoulder, has a span across the antlers of 1.8 m (6 ft) and averages 634.5 kg (1,396 lbs) in males and 478 kg (1,052 lbs) in females.[8] Typically, however, the antlers of a mature specimen are between 1.2 m (3.9 ft) and 1.5 m (4.9 ft).”

  • Jan Timmons replied

Cute, eh? Later he got grumpy and did that less cute thing with the ears. That’s gratitude—with a jaw full of our remaining foliage.
    (That was a feature, already?)

  • Jan Timmons replied

Wouldn’t it be cool to have a lifelike inflatable half-a-moose?
    Congratulations on your great grizzly!

  • Jan Timmons replied

Sorry to explode the myth! We did have emus in the town though, does that make up for it. They, however, are not as splendid as your mate here.

  • Jan Timmons replied

Oh, emus definitely take the cake. They’re splendidly tall and gangly for a non-flying bird! I’m not sure gangly is a word, but you know what I mean.

That’s MUCH better than a garden gnome! Where can I get one? Nah, on second thought it’s probably not allowed by my HOA.

    Still, what a wonderful catch.

  • Jan Timmons replied

Clever man! Not as great as an elk bugling, Jay, but definitely better than a pink plastic flamingo, perhaps. Our HOA doesn’t even try to address moose and bear in the ‘burbs.
Still, part of my heart belongs to Colorado when I see your photos of RMNP atop some high peak.

  • Joanne Bradley

    Joanne Bradley

Amazing shot! Oh how I would love to get a moose with a great big rack like that! (Does that sound strange?) Great shot Jan!

  • Jan Timmons replied

I understand. Would look good in one of your recent foggy lake photos, with dripping long grass from his, er, mouth.) Your recent photos are gorgeous! Like your new avatar/profile pic, too. (At least it’s new to me.)

  • Cherax

    Cherax

I like that, he’s sniffing the flowers, getting in touch with his feminine side. Maybe mulling over the best aperture to them with.
Big animals if feeling grumpy. How careful do you have to be round them?

  • Jan Timmons replied

He’s not snuffling, he’s eating the hedge, Rod. But we love them.
Very, very cautious. More cautious than I was. I think Howard would happily put a leash on me, but he had my longer lens.

  • Crystal Zacharias

    Crystal Zacharias

What an incredible photo! Much better than the ones of the moose I captured! Well done.

  • Jan Timmons replied

  • Steve Sharp

    Steve Sharp

There is something very endearing and cute about mooses (at least to those of us who don’t live amongst them… don’t know how they are perceived in your area!)

  • Jan Timmons replied

I agree. Love ‘em. They get right o’ way on the road, four-lane highway (we have one!) or hiking path. Sloppy gardeners, though.

  • A.M. Ruttle

    A.M. Ruttle

p.s. You should put the focal length in your description so that folks can know HOW close you were!

  • Jan Timmons replied

Well, I’m not sure that 170mm, f/8, 1/60, ISO 200, and handheld against a rock gives a real indication of distance. Do you?

  • Gene Walls

    Gene Walls

Great shot, Jan! That’s a fantastic idea, just let the wildlife come to you! It won’t likely happen for most of us, but when your idea works, it’s truly awesome. I love your wonderful capture, no matter where you shot it!

Thanks, Gene. Now, if he’d just been next to one of the many “Moose Crossing” signs.

  • Roka

    Roka

The size of this mammal would be quite a surprise to walk upon. The moose grazing in the flowers is such a contrast with the size of the animal & the small flowers. A very peacful image. My mother has had a deer on her front porch and a bear tear up her trash - they come closer in her region of VA is suffering a drought.

Holy Cow! I mean, Bull! Whatever! I don’t know how far from him you were but you were brave, regardless! Congrats on ALL the Features!

Excellent capture! I love the comical aspect of this one. He appears to be warning you that he is not leaving.
