Awesome Jan. You know, I might be putting my foot in my mouth, but so be it. Your shots just keep getting better and better.—Steve
Jan Timmons replied
What a great thing to write, Steve, and I’m so glad you think so. I hope to improve wildly beyond my self-doubt – reading and studying.
nadine henley
another great zigzag landscape, jan!
Jan Timmons replied
The site and sight draws me there. We walk over to this neighborhood cliff surrounded by the water and tidepools of Cool Inlet. Geese and other shorebirds, as you know, fly against the backdrop of the Kenai mountains or the Chugach. Quiet and often boggy and marshy, but a vast panorama of, yes, zigs and zags toward the east. I can kneel there with dogs and just admire. People come to sit facing south to watch the bore tide pour in and then recede just as quickly. Peaceful and exhilarating.
Would not want to be there during a large quake, however.

Hi Jan. This is a beauty. I find myself really taking in no just the image but the technical info as well. I notice you used a monopod rather than a tripod … my sis Dusker tells me they are far more easy to lug about. And I also notice that you had you camera set on spot metering, and was interested in why you chose that setting.
Jan Timmons replied
Hi Jude, I want to experiment as much as possible with manual exposure, and spot metering allows me to chose the focal point and meter for that area, a la the zone system. I think wikipedia explains my reasoning better, with a comparison of the methods of metering. Experimenting. The cameras have so many computer chips and capabilities – much more than I know. The tripod was too heavy to lug in addition to the dog frisbee and watching out for the pooches, and the monopod helps to keep me upright as a walking stick. Plus it adjusts and lowers more quickly. But I vary. What do you use most often?
Martina Fagan
This is a brilliant shot thats well composed and has great colours
Karen Betts
Simply beautiful, the tones of the grass and the trees blend so beautifully and move across uptio the hills. Just a view i could stand and take in for ages, a view that heals the soul. : )

Looks as if the image has been divided in five parts. Yet each component compliments and enhances its adjacent part and thus creating continuity. Well done for a very beautiful photo, Jan.
Jan Timmons replied
Appreciate your kind and encouraging remarks, Xandru. Thank you. (How goes parenting?)
Jane Best
This is a beautiful scene. Warm and inviting.
Jan Timmons replied
Appreciate your comment, Jane. I forgot to thank you, but instead went to your site to admire your work.

I love the depth involved. The marshy lowlands blending into scrub, the backdrop of cloud and ranges, framed by a foreground from height. Complexity worthy of a large frame format of old. Please return in the change of Winter for the seasonal shift. The Four Seasons would make a great series I suspect.
Jan Timmons replied
Fascinating comment, Dennis. I suspect this cliff or bluff will become a regular feature, except for ‘breakup’, elsewhere known as spring. Icy, muddy, refreezing to ice – a time of challenge for the heartiest Alaskan. And lots of Labrador retriever showers and baths. Daily. But first, to enjoy winter.
Iris Greenwell
Wow, this is so beautiful and seren. Great work!
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you, Iris. I’ll start lugging my tripod with me, also, when I can.

Aloha ‘oe,

Jan Timmons replied
Thank you, Sharon. I missed this. Took Deb’s comment to alert me.
Again, an honor – and a joy to sit on ‘my’ cliff and feel the sea breeze (inlet) and see three magnificent mountain ranges. I know you can picture this.
H M Bascom
This is a very beautiful vista.
Jan Timmons replied
I love it, Helen. Wish I could capture the inlet and all three mountain ranges, add a scratch ‘n’ sniff for the sea breeze and audio for the shore birds. Oh yeah, that’s a different camera, except for the olfactory part.
