Wild no more
We had too much wind today to capture these wildflowers outdoors. Thus, almost a wild setting except for:
An antique (a.k.a. tarnished) silver vase
Nikon D200
Nikkor 105mm macro lens
105mm
f/22
1.3 sec
-0.3ev
ISO 100
manual exposure and focusing
studio lights
Collapsible gold reflector disc, mostly to shield the vase from too much light
Manfrotto tripod
Converted from RAW to jpeg using Capture NX2.2.1

The true macro lacks even more emotion, but was a joy for me to shoot. (Not posted).

fabulous jan! colours and composition – I thought I’d better get in quick before you hit the delete button! This one’s definitely a keeper.
Jan Timmons replied
Definitely separated at birth, Nadine. How does one convey a story and emotion with flowers?

The black bg really makes the color pop. Great light too.
Jan Timmons replied
Speaking of color, love the pure gold of your quaking aspen leaves in Vail, Steve.
Georgie Hart
Wonderful composition, lighting and detail Jan…exquisite capture. No story or emotion…? I think they’re proud and cool, despite the warm tones, not to mention determined to make the most of their moment in the sun – are they aware of the short but spectacular life of the flower?
Jan Timmons replied
Zen wildflowers, alive in the now, eh? The blooms close at night and now, with the studio lights off, they have begun to close. I felt sorry to cut them.
OldBirch
Perfect, Jan! Couldn’t be better. A lovely shot!
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, C. Did you enter the blue challenge? I would check, but can’t recall where I saw it. With that long exposure and vapor trail, I encourage you to enter, if you ‘do’ challenges.
Jan Timmons replied
Love your edited profile text.

Just lovely Jan. The flowers colors really pop against the dark back! Lovely lighting.

Very effective. Shows how far we’ve come in our understanding of light. In the old days we’d have just used auto light setting, and the camera would’ve deemed this version hopelessly* underexposed. But of course it works very nicely the way you’ve done it.
Jan Timmons replied
Heh. Cameras have feelings, too.
Laurie Search
Such beautiful light and color!!!! Wonderful!
Jan Timmons replied
Appreciate that, Laurie.

Jan, these are so beautiful; a lovely arrangement and the black background complements the bright colour much better than their natural environment can.

Wow Jan! Wish I knew how to take a photo like this – even the lighting on the stems is perfect.
Jan Timmons replied
Kind of you not to remind me of remarks last year about flowers, Richard.
Rick & Deb Larson
♥ how the two flowers are placed in the tarnished vase, the colors are AWESOME against the black backdrop!! Take Care ~ Rick & Deb ~ ☺
Jan Timmons replied
I feel bad about letting that silver tarnish. We need a butler, don’t you?Not sure if these are tiny wild poppies – what do you think? And what feature?
Rick & Deb Larson
LOL Jan … you have a scenic capture featured in Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams today … check it out!! Take Care ~ Rick & Deb ~ (P.S. I’m not sure if these are Iceland Poppies or not, but they do look like ‘em).

I love these .. Californian Poppy? Great still life.

Some version, perhaps, but these are far tinier and just Alaska wildflowers. Mutants? Brought by birds a long time ago? Thanks, Barbara.

The dark b/g makes the flowers really sing. They may have had a short life in the sun, but they are now immortalised on RB

Beautiful light tones and a perfect choice of background. I’m curious – there surely wouldn’t be many flowers blooming in your beautiful state now, would there?
Jan Timmons replied 9 days ago
I can’t speak for the southeast area, but I would think the growing season has ended. Certainly in our snow-covered area, we can only grow bulbs indoors.
Mabs 9 days ago
Such a lovely result – a beautiful capture !!
LOL! Been there…. on many a windy, rainy, overly sunny day and had to resort to the light cube and the rest…. :o)
