Heading south
Sandhill cranes prepare to fly to warmer climes. Clouds enshroud the Kenai mountains behind them as they fly over Cook Inlet. I had this printed quite large and feel delighted with the clarity of the cranes!

- Dedicated to Australia’s Barbara Burkhardt, with whom I had tea and a moment of joy. Wonderful subtle sense of humor (humour).. I feel fortunate to have met this adventuous, talented woman and her handsome husband as they toured Alaska. I assume all Australians are as fun.

This is a beautiful image Jan, I love the Sandhill Cranes. It is a wonderful exposure with tremendous depth and I can almost hear their distinctive calls as they are flying. I love this photograph. And it is a wonderful tribute for Barbara.
Your commentary is fantastic and your comments with hyperlinks on this page are inspirational and extraordinarily altruistic. Beautiful work, congratulations on your wonderful feature today in Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams

Jan Timmons replied
You definitely need more recovery time, Nadine. I think you’re still feverish. Good eye for location, but these are sandhill cranes, not geese. I changed the title from “Leaving” after having high tea with Barbara. Thanks for the lovely comment; geese migrating will be next.

This is such an incredibly beautiful image Jan, I am humbled by your dedication, thank you I feel the image name is so apt as we have seen this part of the world now for the last time ~ there is a sadness to it and a sense of calmness.
Jan Timmons replied
You brightened my day. Sorry to see you leave with such finality.
Jan Timmons replied
Ironic that we discussed earthquakes and tsunamis and then had an honorary 5.1 magnitude seismic shift in your honor here. Perhaps you were still here to feel it?
kevinmawson
Hi Jan in answer to your interesting question, I have to say that i have always been a very observant person and i try to lo0k for the light ,study the effect of light hitting what ever the subject may be,before taking the image, Asfor painting ,I like emotion and feelings lead the way! Thank You for asking!

Jan Timmons replied
I wondered if you began at an early age as my sister did, around three or four years. Bonnie has always made art her career and passion, and I’m very proud of her.
I’m also often curious why some know so early and others discover their creativity later in life, if at all. I don’t mean to sound intrusive. Thanks for answering!
kevinmawson
one word Jen! Passion! that says it all, Thank You for the link, Your sister is very talented!

Jan Timmons replied
I just re-read your “Passion!” and took a deep breath. Don’t let the little things get you down, eh?

Oh Jan … you captured some Cranes over the inlet, well done!! (Too bad they are headed south … a sure sign that winter is just around the corner). Take Care ~ Rick & Deb ~ ☺

With the termination dust on the Chugach, they were wise to leave. Don’t worry, Deb. They’ll return.

Such a great shot! Great timing in catching the wings ‘just so’, great light and colours captured – I love the stillness of the environment, all cold, contrasting with the (seemingly very slow) flight of the cranes, the only spots of warmer colour…
