Fireweed and the Chugach range
I love rainy, overcast, windy days. Someone has to, I suppose. The pink/purple of the fireweed has yet to reach its full splendor. As Alaskan legend has it, when fireweed blooms all the way to the top of its spire – the six-week countdown to winter begins. Some of us can hardly wait.
It felt great to get out in the elements!

Nice work, Jan! It’s beautiful! Lovely colours and great depth. You are using those filters to good advantge!
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, C. This might look dark to some, and I fiddled with the curve and levels, but decided to keep the look as it seemed to me. Appreciate your encouragement very much.
PhotoAvenue
What a beautiful image….great DOF
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you. After part of my photo course, I finally began to see the need for a smaller aperture in landscape shots. I’m so glad you noticed.
Joanne Bradley
This is so beautiful, an adjective used frequently I know, but when it comes to your part of the world, it is completely sincere! I love the colors, the dof, and I find your vertical presentation enhances the whole image enabling us to be quite quickly drawn in.
Jan Timmons replied
What a lovely comment, Joanne! I would love to do the scene justice, and as long as I use a tripod or monopod, I seldom need to do other than point the camera. This place is just one photo op after another.
KatsEye
Gorgeous view Jan.
Jan Timmons replied
Appreciate your comment, KatsEye. Looks as though you’re working on depth of field and getting help from Al and Adam? Cool!
WatscapePhoto
Magnificenr image, Jan. Great saturated colour and super composition.
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Steven. You do know that I don’t touch the saturation, right? It just comes out that way. I’m sort of ancillary for the photo, actually.
nadine henley
perfect! a zig from rt to left along the line of the flowers, a zag down into the valley, a hover over the water, a zig left again to the start of the trees and then zag along the trees to the magnificent mountains. This is landscape!
Jan Timmons replied
Very funny. I’ll pretend I did those zigs and zags on purpose. Thanks, Nadine.
chijude
Love Nadine’s comment. Full of interest … and a feast for the eyes. Love the notion re the Fire Weed being a winter yardstick.
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Jude. I’ll bet your coffee grinder had an equal number of votes or close to the winner. That challenge system is a bit wonky, and yours is a good shot.
Richard Stanley
Definitely a ripper shot Jan – artfully composed and lovely colours. Are you saying you are actually looking forward to winter?
Jan Timmons replied
Yep. Love winter. February gets a tad long and dark, and breakup in the spring is messy, but I do love winter and snow and wool and dressing in four layers. Don’t you?
Stan Wojtaszek
Don’t kid yourself, Jan. I would hate to guess how many people see something like this and think nothing of it.
Good eye. Good technique.
Very good photo !! :)
Jan Timmons replied
Appreciate that, Stan. Your Ladders certainly is a creative, lovely shot!
Al Bourassa
Just gorgeous !!!
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Al. You’re producing an entire t-shirt factory in two days?
Kim Calvert
So beautiful Jan..lovely colors..peaceful..
Angel Perry
Fantastic view! The purple just makes the image for me:)
chijude
You are too kind Jan. Re coffee grinder … no in this instance I was not that close to the winner. And thank you for your encouragement.
BarbaraManis

Karen Betts
this is wonderful, i could look at this for ages Jan, the depth of feild and those distant clouds over the hills and the sweeping grass and pool of water , then to just add the cherry on the cake those wonderful spikes of purple. i would happily sit with a mug of tea and watching the changes of nature around me here. a fav.
Jack Grace
Aloha Jan, I think the light is perfect in this gorgeous scene. I lived in Delta Junction in the early 70’s, still miss the beauty of Alaska, but love the warmth of Maui even more. {:-))
Jellybean720
Beautiful.. Great Capture :))
Steve Buffington
Outstanding Jan! Just outstanding!—Steve

I can understand what you meant about fiddling with Curves and keeping the darker feel -certainly gives it a Wintry tinge. So this is your country without snow? New to me!!:)) I love the colour and name of the fireweed – and the sense of legend, perhaps not just about the plant, but surely the whole range – there be many a legend to those impressive mountains, I would think:)
Jan Timmons replied
Well, this is only a wee part of the area, but yep—these are the nearby tide pools and Chugach mountains without snow. I like the native legends, too. For example, “cheechako” refers to a newcomer to Alaska (and I think to adjacent parts of Canada), one who is ignorant of the terrain, the weather, the animals, the culture, the necessary driving skills in the winter, etc. Opposite of a sourdough. The word was imported from Chinook native jargon.
Jan Fijolek
Beautiful capture Jan, I love f,m and background. Lovely colours. And as for your comment about overcast and rain; it clears the air so you can take great shots like this one ;)))
Veikko Suikkanen
Congratulations! This work has been featured in the group DSLR User Only!
Fantastic work Jan! ;)
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you, Veikko. This is indeed an honor.

Superb picture. Great work.
Mary Campbell
What a beautiful scene, so well captured. I think it must be a joy to live in such a beautiful place (well at least in the summer time as I don’t know if I’d survive the winter there.).
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you, Mary. Yes, you’d have to love snow and tolerate colder temps than you might like. I wilt in NJ summer weather, however. Perhaps we live in the right places.
Antanas
amazing view, lovely work…
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks very much, Antanas, and for the favorite.
kathy s gillen...
beautiful capture
Lenka
Nice work, Jan! Great full colours due to slight underexposure, and well done with grad filter to get more detail in mountains and sky. Pleasant colour accent in the foreground, nicely composed with interestingly framed pond :)
Debbie Roelle
Very nice view I love the contrast in colors, well done
nadine henley
hey, congrats on the feature for this one, jan and did you know it’s on p. 22 of the most popular art pages (7 days)? way to go!
Jan Timmons replied
I only recently learned of the popular pages. Do you think looking at what becomes popular affects your future photography?

What a beautiful view, Such good colors…Excellent image!
Jan Timmons replied
Appreciate your kind comment, Ellen.
Eivor Kuchta
You would have enjoyed Colorado this summer. Lots of rain and more cloudy days than I’ve seen here. Yesterday Denver only got up to 63 degrees. I haven’t heard that about six-week countdown, but I remember we considered it being the end of the summer when the fireweed reached to the top. Wonderful composition, Jan!
Jan Timmons replied
Yes, my kind of weather, but not so good for photography for you, Eivor? We had planned a trip to the Rockies this summer, but had to cancel. Darn.
Assume you had fireweed when you lived in, uhm, Norway?
Eivor Kuchta
Oops, my mistake. I was going to write “when I lived in Sweden” in my comment, but that slipped out.
Jan Timmons replied
Oops, also. I was going to go back to jpgmag to check. Sorry, Sweden! Of course. You have some gorgeous shots of your sidetrips to Utah and Arizona, Eivor. I’ve admired your work for several years now.
Roka
Woah, girl! This is absolutely gorgeous! Straight to faves, my friend!
Jan Timmons replied
Sounds as though you’re sending me back to the gym. Sorry, coach! No, really, thanks Roka.
Joe Mortelliti
Like the different layers of colours, nice work Jan
dinghysailor1
astonishingly good landscape work.. love the finishing touch added by the wispy clouds to this lovely scene.. here we call those flowers ’ rosebay willowherb’... such a pretty name for these flowers (love your closeup by the way!)
:))
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you, Maggie. But no bench in sight for the foreground, sadly. Or on which to sit to listen to the shorebirds.
dinghysailor1
LOL dont be sad..no need to add or take anything away – this is just perfect!!!!

Jan Timmons replied
What an honor, Sharon. Thank you very much.
Jan Timmons replied
Er, Sharon? You featured this one already. If I’d managed to find a bull moose yesterday, I could have posted that, but I took the wrong trail. Perhap you could chose someone else’s work. Thanks anyway!
KarenKSmith
Well first congrats on the well deserved feature..this is a PERFECT landscape photo. Wonderful color and dof…overcast days are certainly good for vivid color!
linaji
you do Alaska such a shine.. your work is subtle and captures the grandure in a very palletable way Jan. And by that Alaska still has such a vast vibe to it.. sometimes a shot like this shows it’s heart too.
