Wild poppies in Alaska
This photo has not been cross-processed properly, apparently. However, I’d never heard of cross-processing until recently. I’ve read that the term started by developing color print or slide film in the wrong chemicals – for example, color negative film in slide chemicals or slide film by the color negative process.
This causes wild color and contrast shifts and requires lots of trial and error. for more, see Dana DiPasquale’s forum page. Apparently a group exists for cross-processing experts, as well.
However, playing with the RGB channels certainly stretched my tendency for more realistic, staid photos! I played with this photo last night using Sue Wickham’s method and the tutorial that Mary Campbell posted. I used curves and RGB channels in Photoshop and Nikon’s Capture NX2.1 software.
This is the Capture NX2 version, with a bit of a vignette blur from efex.
Original: Nikon D200, Nikkor 70-300mm, 145mm, f/5.6, 1/1000sec, -0.3ev., ISO 200, manual exposure,
Converted from 12-bit RAW to jpeg. Manfrotto tripod.

Wow a lot of information to soak in and a great result for this photo.. great work and information! lol =)
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Angel. I tucked the photo at the very end of my photos, hoping no one would see my first effort! Oops. You’re very kind.

Your efforts were well worth it Jan, this is really lovely. I love the dark rich tones.

Jan, this is gorgeous! The stems coming up diagonally from the corner, the delicate, paper like blooms in the top right, the colourful blurred background and the lighting, and the treatment, all excellent! Way to go!

Thanks for the interesting story. I haven’t heard of this. You also came up with a nice result.
Jan Timmons replied
Appreciate your comment, R. I hadn’t heard of it and think if it began as an accident, why not concentrate on practicing lighting and and composition instead? That’s where I need to work. But I was house-bound, at best deck-bound.

Very nice Jan, love the colors, nice composition, and good use of DOF.
Another Nikon’s Capture user, seems we’re few and far between, I’m still using NX, is 2.1 an improvement?
Cheers,
Jon.
Jan Timmons replied
It’s been a while since I upgraded, but I’m sure that the upgrade to 2.1.1 proved worthwhile. Apparently, according to my spouse Photoshop’s CS4 incorporated some of NX’s abilities. We have several versions of PS, but I much prefer NX, too.
