Thinking of hue
Found many of these lovely flowers blowing in the wind this evening. Poppies, perhaps. Used the opportunity to practice selective focus, since the aperture needed to remain large with as fast a shutter speed as possible in the wind.
Nikon D300 and a Nikkor 105mm macro lens. 105mm, at f/6.3 and 1/400 sec, -0.3ev, IS0 200, manual exposure. monopod. Converted from 14-bit RAW to jpeg using Capture NX 2.1. Bright sunlight, windy. Unedited. 4288×2848px, high-res
Meanwhile, I’ve been deleting landscape shots, all the while asking What makes a good landscape shot? in the forum of A Photographer’s Craft. Some great responses.

Hi Jan. Lovely vibrant colour of the poppy contrasts well with the very dark background. Nice bokeh too.

Oh Jan! This is such a lovely color. Impressed it was a windy day. I know how tough that can be on macro shots. Brilliant work! My eyes just fell in love.

beautiful capture – the light is just perfect on that stunning bloom…
:))
Jan Timmons replied
The stem doesn’t show, however. I might adjust in curves. Or just let it float.
dinghysailor1
i love it floating there – a bright spot in the darkness…
Jan Timmons replied
Good, good. Thanks, Maggie. I’ll spend my time making flying benches.

Much ado about the hue!
Lovely little poppy…they’re the most fabulous flower…delicate papery petals and then their seeds scatter with the wind and will grow anywhere!!!! Beautiful presentation Jan!
Jan Timmons replied
Your comment still makes me grin. Sorry for the belated appreciation, Karen, and thanks. The poppies do seem to have an appealing ability to let light flow through them.

love the color & comp ~ the feeling of float ~ a light in the deep dark green ~ spot on Jan xx
sonjas
Awesome. Love the feeling of float.
Cherax
The flower floats in space, like a radio telescope looking for other planets. It’s nicely enhanced by the orange on deep green.
I’d like a tad more depth of field.

Fair enough. If the wind stops blowing, I’ll get you more dof.
Looking forward to reading the grumpy essay. Thanks!

Cursed wind, lamp posts, stray cars and pedestrian, all conspire to spoil that perfect photographic moment. How many times have you viewed that perfect scene but for the power lines ripping it in two.
There. You’ve nudged me into one of those wordy moments.
The essays are very good, but got me annoyed at some stage with snipey remarks.
Jan Timmons replied
The essays seem written by a person with a grudge of some sort. Do you think he meant that “Colossus” (Francisco Goya, 1808-1812) is a landscape photo?

This is beautiful i wished i had have spoken to you about a reference photo, before i painted my poppies from memory,Bev
Jan Timmons replied
You painted your poppies beautifully, Bev. You certainly didn’t need this one! But thank you.

Very clever. Thanks, Bev.

I didn’t know poppies grow in Alaska. I was (briefly) in your beautiful state about eight months ago.
