Tension
Toklat in his zen mode draped over the top stair, after a rough day hiking and playing. I named him Toklat, which is a river and glacier in the Denali National Park and Preserve, after doing some editing and layout work for the Denali park service. Toklat is a very sweet and uncomplicated dark-chocolate Retriever.
He doesn’t chase moose. I hope he won’t chase bears.
Taken for a challenge in the “Man’s Best Friend” group, and, well, because I can’t resist taking photos of our two Labs.
- Toklat placed in the top ten of the “Man’s Best Friend” challenge. You should see him when he gets excited (this isn’t the time).
- Toklat’s looks earned him a feature at “Man’s Best Friend” – Thank you!

Just beautiful Jan! He is soooo lovely :)))

Oh, a dog that has earned his rest! Our four-legged son watched my husband and me planting spring things on the deck this afternoon, taking time to nip my gloves or insist upon playing with one of his toys while he “hardly worked” alongside us. Ahhhhh, it’s so nice to have human slaves!!! Love your Toklat’s dreamy photo.
kalaryder
So cute, so totally relaxed !
nadine henley
great portrait! I guess you didn’t need a fast shutter speed.
Jan Timmons replied
I think the ss should at least equal the lens size, or something similar, but I rested the my wrist on my knee as I scrunched down on the step below him and tried to capture the high dynamic range. Bright, bright sun streaming in from the tall window on the second landing.
Richard Stanley
That’s one tuckered ‘uncomplicated pooch’ Jan – great shot – love his nose!
Steve Buffington
What a great looking dog. Like the capture. Well executed and unique Jan.
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Steve. He’s a sweetheart, and always in the “now”. Teaches me.
Jan Timmons replied
Do you have a dog, Steve?
Dusker
Is someone massaging him?? Oh how to be totally relaxed. Great dog and shot.
Jan Timmons replied
Oh no. He prefers his space while resting.
Thanks.

Love it and love the title!

Oh what a cutie pie! Love how it appears if you lifted a paw…he would be out for the count!... Great lighting too. The close up just makes you want to put kisses on his head. Perfect Jan!
Mindy47
Great portrait! he`s looks so adorable.
chijude
Love your sense of humour. This is a pooped pooch without a care! Beautiful work Jan!
Bev Woodman
Its a dog’s life!! This is cute and brilliant. Oh to be this laid back.
Suzanne D Jaes...
Wow so relaxed, love the clear crispness of Toklat … :)
Cherax
Stress city. I would’ve thought not to worry too much about him chasing bears. Coming very soon after the lesson on how to chase a bear is the lesson on how to run from a bear.
Spot on posing by Toklat, and composition by you. Do you think you can get him to pose again, but without the overexposed patch under his paw?
Jan Timmons replied
Yes, I had a tough time getting the dynamic range between his dark fur and the bright sun streaming through the high second-story window. Just happened upon him after using the macro lens, and scrunched as close as possible on the step below. Meanwhile, our older and more complicated female kept moving in front of the camera. Plenty of opportunities to try again, Rod.

It’s almost like the dog is bowing his head and saying a few prayers to doggie heaven.
Jan Timmons replied
That’s actually his zen mode. He’s one of the few laid-back Labs; our other Lab is a high-energy alpha queen!
Amanda Wojtaszek
This pic actually made me “AWWWWWWW” out loud!! What a sweet picture. :-)
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Amanda. You write that your brother and father are the photographers? My sister got the creative genes. Mine have been dormant for decades. Good to know you’re pursuing a slightly larger video – 3200 mm prime!
Mary Campbell
Nice composition, really makes you want to pet him.

Vickie Emms
what a gorgeous photo! and I LOVE his name, Toklat. that word will be forever in my heart after just returning from Alaska last week. Toklat was the name of the turnaround point on our tour of the gorgeous Denali park. It was so gorgeous we want to go back, but without company. The trip was very rushed. Anyway, in a word Alaska is FABULOUS
Jan Timmons replied
I fell in love with the physical aspects of the state, too, Vickie. Years ago my mother forced us to accompany her on a cruise. A year later a headhunter called my spouse, and we moved here and lived happily ever after (except for the forest fires this summer—usually it rains a lot, as you discovered in June).
benthebrown
That is so very very cute and I wish I was him ;)
