Sun on Chugach Mountains, Alaska
Today’s hike on windswept snow in part of the Chugach mountain range, Alaska, overlapping state and national parks.
- Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams featured – Thank you!
Nikon D200 and a Nikkor 18-70 at 18mm at f/9 and 1/1250 sec, -.3ev. Using a circular polarizing filter.
Converted from RAW to jpeg using Capture NX2. Light curve added. Otherwise, as is.
Constructive comments welcomed, i.e., too much foreground, foreground too angled? Not enough interest unless one is there in the wind and cold air, breathing in nature and silence? Okay to comment; I have 6GBs of shots remaining.

WOW! Awesome capture!
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Cheryl. How encouraging!
KatsEye
Wow! This is outstanding. I love the angle, it brings the eyes all the way through to the end.
Jan Timmons replied
Really, KatsEye? Good to read!
solarrain
what a dramatic sky and wonderful landscape.
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, solarrain. I’ve always admired your Ending Storm, the first work of yours I saw, I think.
KatsEye
Yes my dear. Your work is just amazing. I love seeing your new stuff. If I had half of you talent, I would be doing better.
Jan Timmons replied
Naw. Are you taking a photo course, too?
Richard Stanley
Very nice photo Jan – I’d say you’ve got the composition about right. Agree with KatsEye – love how it leads the eye down the valley on bottom left. That’s a nice lens, the 18-70 – very underrated.
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you, Richard. Good to read about leading the eye, not something I’ve learned in my course, and I’ve meant to ask you and Harry. (18-200mm hasn’t arrived.)
KatsEye
No I am not. I learn by error or by what people suggest I do, then I try it.
Jan Timmons replied
Someone else suggested that I do that. Sounds like an excellent way to learn.
Patty Boyte
Gorgeous Jan, the clouds seem to be challenging the mountains. Love the depth in the valley area. A very majestic shot.
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Patty. I liked the way you express that. The clouds moved very quickly, and the wind made the “windproof” part of my REI light jacket a misnomer. Dressed too lightly for part of the walk.
DragonFlyer
Sensational shot Jan! And I’m terribly jealous that you live in a place close enough to scenery like this to go for a hike in it… (lol)! I’m really impressed with this – you’ve done something very unusual composition – wise with the apparently sloping ‘horizon’ (though it’s not REALLY a ‘horizon’ is it – just seems to be…) and I really like the way this works in this image – there’s great movement all around the image from the front up the RHS along the snow-covered slope of the mountain, through and around the clouds and down into the valley… The only thing I would prefer is if there could be a bit more darkness and intensity further up through the clouds on the LHS, as for me this would provide better balance in the composition with the great degree of angle you have in the foreground… You couldn’t manage to get the clouds to line themselves up more like that (lol)?
But, all that aside – I think it’s a great image with heaps to keep the eye interested! Wonderful work – congrats :)))
Jan Timmons replied
I’m so pleased by your enthusiastic comments. I like to see a scene the way that others see it, and I’m thrilled that you took the time to describe it for me.
I’m sure those more talented than I in Photoshop could arrange the clouds!
Steve Buffington
Yow! (variant of “wow”). What really makes this exceptional is the clouds. I think it is better than having a nice blue sky on this one. Well done Jan.
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Steve. I took the risk of shooting into the sun just becasue of those clouds. Did have the CP on, but I always forget to bring the Cokin Grad ND. I think I’ll get a circular graduated ND – easier to carry when hiking.
Scott d'Almeida
wow excellent one…..........
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Scott.
Al Bourassa
Well done Jan.
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Al.
Karen Betts
Sorry for me i cannot find anything wrong at all in the image love that colouring of the image it is not B&W but has subtleness through it .The clouds are wonderful almost feel the wind swirling them in the air.
May i ask what photographic course you are doing?
Jan Timmons replied
Sure, Karen. I’m dragging along this year with snail mail and printed photos and lesson plans and glossy material through the New York Institute of Photography (nyip.com). They seem thorough, but were just in the midst of moving to CDs and DVDs when I started. I must admit that I’ve stalled at portraits. I’d rather be outside. Flowers weren’t part of any exercises, but I used our lighting sets on flowers rather than people – at least so far. Can’t dodge that course unit forever, however.
Brian Carey
Nice shot Jan. The cloud detail and formation is fabulous!
Jan Timmons replied
I’m delighted that you like it, Brian.

And my dream is to go to Alaska…..
Lenka
Beautiful landscape, and very well captured, Jan :) I really like both the composition and exposure, that surely was all but easy to get right, with so much snow and shooting to the sun! Well done :)
Richard Veal
Excellent capture Jan.
Just love that sky.
Patricia Montg...

I really love the contrast between the clouds and the harshness of the mountains. A beautiful capture.

Rick & Deb Larson
LOL Jan (I read your info….just 6 GBs of shots….girl I can fill a 16Gig card with one subject, and then reach for one of my 8’s, LOL). Great mountain scenic capture, CONGRATS on your well deserved feature!! WTG!! Take Care ~ Deb ~ :)
Jan Timmons replied
A 16GB card costs a lotta money! I had no idea. I’ve just borrowed from my mate, but read an Adorama catalog recently. If I were as skilled as you and your mate, I might shoot 16GBs. Let me ask you; do you fall over often while hiking, looking at potential shots?
Rick & Deb Larson
LOL Jan, UMMMMMM….lets just say that if I’m focused on something other then walking…..I have to admit, that I have fallen :( down. (I fell in Vegas right in the middle between the North and South bound lanes of the strip, at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign, I went down hard too, hit the edge of my camera body and lens (almost went straight down on the front of the lens, managed to flick my wrist just enough before making contact….talk about embarrassed….I told Rick that I really need to start paying attention to walking and not on getting to the perfect spot to take a photo so quickly….I need to slow down a bit, as when it comes to photo ops….I have one speed, RUSH). Thanks for your praise, it’s really unnecessary as we are just amateurs with lots to learn. Take Care ~ Deb ~ :)
dinghysailor1
teehee would have been a bit chilly to linger longer there… but youre welcome to sit on my bench anytime jan…lol… love this work
Ben Herman
This is an epic image, great work! Love the lines and texture.
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you, Ben. It was an absolute joy to walk there. Appreciate your encouragement.
Walter Quirtmair
Great light, makes me want to be there!
Jan Timmons replied
I’ve long felt similarly about the Alps and all that you photograph, Walter. I admire your work.
Cherax
The challenge is on to find something to pick on, but it’s a worthy one for a featured image. I love the dramatic sky, enhanced by the polariser, and the foreground leading you into the image is just right. The mountain ‘looks into’ the frame.
mmmm, what about the minor dark patch on extreme right, just above the mountain, on the edge of the frame…mmmm….not sure I could call that an issue. Oh well, excellent stuff, making good use of that stunning terrain of yours (Alaska, that is).
Jan Timmons replied
Belated thanks, Rod. Appreciate your time in telling me what you see. I didn’t see that the mountain ‘looks into’ the frame.
Margaret Shark
It’s as though the mountain is sliding into the clouds. Fascinating. What a beautiful image. Would love to go back to Alaska. It is heaven on earth.
Jan Timmons replied
Thanks, Margaret. I hope you can.
LindaR
wow ~ the power and the glory of nature just filled the frame ~ beautiful xx

a fave
Love mountain scenes in b&w
Martina Fagan
Perfect a superb shot:))
Evan Spellman
Very Beautiful Setting—splendid photo
John Wright
Very beautiful, well composed and great exposure.
Jan Timmons replied
Thank you, John. Encouraging words. I saw your concern for the environment on Mary Campbell’s recent post and decided that I had to see your work and support your concerns.
nadine henley
fabulous b&w – I must have missed this!
Jan Timmons replied
I know all that snow and dark mountain areas emerging from snow look black and white, but it’s not! There’s a patch of blue in the sky. No selective colour, either.
nadine henley
I did wonder as I was posting and did go back and check but didn’t spot the blue. That makes it even more amazing!
Jan Timmons replied
I’d forgotten how we begin to hunger for colour in spring. Many direct flights from Alaska to Hawaii during the winter, although we’ve not gone.
Craig Hender
Awesome shot, so dramatic.
