Longest day - shortest night

Sunlight seems to last the night as we reach the summer equinox.

Last year I purchased a Cokin two-f/stop graduated filter for the longest day. We headed to a bluff that overlooks Mt. Susitna and Cook Inlet at 10:30 p.m. to capture the light and sun. Sunset occurred around 11:30 p.m., but the nights don’t grow truly dark.

Mount Susitna, which only partially appears in this shot, is often called The Sleeping Lady for its resemblance to a recumbent woman. The name is sometimes said to derive from a Dena’ina legend, in which a woman named Susitna belonging to a race of giants vows to sleep until world peace is achieved.

This is a classy shot, Jan. Nice use of the foliage to filter the sun and make the shot possible. Great handling of a still tricky exposure problem and what beautiful colour. Magic!!!

cant imagine watching a sunset at almost midnight…How cool! thanks for sharing:)

  • Jan Timmons replied

It’s fun. Although celebrating the onset of dwindling light seems counterintuitive.

What a beautiful captue. Love the sun in the corner. Great job.

  • Jan Timmons replied

I appreciate your encouragement and adding this to your favorites, KatsEye. Much as I enjoy winter, at 0°F today, I like to remember a bit warmer time of the year.

I agree 100%. If we do not make it above 32 degrees to day, we will have had the coldest January in 30 years. I welcome warm weather. With my condition, I need warm air.

A stunningly beautiful image Jan! Somehow the sun up so late in summer has a different coloured glow to that in other parts of the world where it sets earlier… (0 degrees F??!!! That IS too cold) ;)))

Great work, Jan. Congrats on adding a graduated filter to your photographic collection last year…I have decided I cannot live without them. This image evoked some nostalgic feelings in me for northern lands and your plentiful summer sunlight. Golden light, rich coloration and a dreamy landscape/seascape….nice! All that’s missing is soft music and some wine. Thank you for writing such an evocative description of your experience.

Hey, did you feel the earthquake two days ago? All okay? My husband read that two brown bears were seen clamming in Turnagain Arm this week. I miss Alaska!!!

  • Jan Timmons replied

I must admit that I would miss Alaska if I weren’t here, also. Yes, that was a nice quake. Just enough to readjust my thinking, but without damage.
Your photos of Yellowstone are magnificent!

  • Jan Timmons replied

Good memory, Harry. The solstice this year was overcast. We’re losing daylight now.

I love love love this ~ the light is heaven ~ full of that unique kind of quality that summer sunlight that is so very precious ~ in your world even more so ~ !! Hold that feeling of memory for me ~ end of a day at the beach, fresh from a shower, cocktails on the deck and the air so soft on the skin ~ total relaxation from a day well lived…sigh…thank you for delivering such a moment for me ~ much needed today :) xxx

Sweden was like this when I worked there. It’s so hard to get your clock adjusted when it’s light all the time. I remember waking up one day thinking it was morning went to work only to find out it was still night (LOL!)
