Silk River

Jan Piller

Silk River

This is one of my stupid mistakes that actually turned out okay. MY DOF was waaaaay too shallow (my aperture wide open to compensate for no light early early in the morning) which maybe wouldn’t have been so bad but on top of it, there was steam rising off the ground making it look like my DOF fell off really abrubtly. I thought it looked like a reflection of the web on on water.

  • Jody Johnson

very cool shot…....not sure how you got it, but I love it…..perfect web!

  • Jan Piller replied

Thanks Jody! It was taken about a foot off the ground with the focus point at where the sun was hitting the web. So in other words I was “semi-under” the web. The bottom portion of the image is just a shallow DOF but it was enhanced by a steamy fog burning off the cool early morning ground. The effect was a reflection bouncing off the steamy fog. It really is amazing out in the fields how just changing your altitude by about 6 inches steams up the lens of the camera! So I had to lay in the wet weeds for about 5 minutes to wait for my lens to clear before I could get the shot. Meantime my dog is destroying every web in my vicinity – I was just praying she didn’t come near me! This was hand held (tripods rip webs apart)

What would we do with out stupid mistakes that make things appear to us that we would not have seen before. What a wonderful shot!!!!!

  • Jan Piller replied

Thanks Elizabeth – yah I like it when you get home so sure you’re going to delete everything and find something that actually worked out okay. I had to take this shot fairly quickly cuz my moron dog was tearing around and destroying all the webs.
