This mother Koala, Joey on her back walked across the road in front of my car. Quite unusual to see this during daylight hours, hence I quickly stopped to get a few photographs, before they disappeared into the trees on the other side of the road.
This photograph was taken just on dusk. I saw approximately 12 Koalas, including these 2 on the road, the rest in their more ‘expected’ position, sleeping high up in the trees. Mum actually had a sore foot, which she is holding up in one of the pics.
The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial native to Australia, and the only extant representative of the family Phascolarctidae. Baby koalas are called joeys, as are the young of all marsupials. Koalas are marsupials, and share the offspring name with all other Australian marsupials, including the kangaroo, wombat, quokka etc.
The koala is found in coastal regions of eastern and southern Australia, from Adelaide to the southern part of Cape York Peninsula. Populations also extend for considerable distances inland in regions with enough moisture to support suitable woodlands. As of 2012 there have been increasing concerns about the animal’s sustainable future in the environment.
Although the koala is not a bear, English-speaking settlers from the late 18th century first called it koala bear due to its similarity in appearance to bears. Although taxonomically incorrect, the name koala bear is still in use today outside Australia – its use is discouraged because of the inaccuracy in the name. (Source, Wikipaedia)
