Standing outside ‘Medhane Alem Adi Kasho’ Church, near Teka Tesfai in the Eastern Tigray region of Ethiopia, I saw this elderly lady. Her weathered appearance couldn’t hide an inner beauty. I was greeted with a beaming smile, as she noted my presence.
Like so many churches in the area, attendance requires a climb up sandstone rocks to reach the entrance. This church has an ‘easier climb’, of approximately 30 minutes from ground level.
Medhane Alem Adi Kasho is possibly the oldest rock-hewn church in Tigray or anywhere in Ethiopia.
