As soon as Margaret stepped out the door she new that this was the vacation she had been longing for. The rain had stopped but the steppingstones beneath her bare feet were still cool. The clouds parted and gave way to a brilliant warm and sunny day. She came upon a small white gate with a flimsy latch, which she opened with ease. She could hear the roar of the ocean and the seagulls cooing, she slowly strolled in that direction.
The trees and flowers were beautiful here, more vibrant and lush than she had ever seen. Margaret found her way to a new path. As she walked she heard the honking of wild geese and felt the breeze twirl around her legs. Her orange and yellow flowered dress was a perfect choice for the scenery and her wide rimmed straw hat was a fashionable match. A day like this brought back many wonderful memories of her childhood, her family once had a cottage down by the beach that they rented every summer, those were the happy times.
It was such a beautiful day that Margaret decided to keep walking. Suddenly a gust of wind came up and blew her hat right off her head. As she watched her straw hat fly up in the air she just smiled and let it go. She was getting tired and had finally arrived at the beach. She walked down to a lone chair and sat for hours just soaking up the sun and watching the waves hit the sand.
The phone rings at Margaret’s son’s office. “Phil, I can’t find your mother! I was just down stairs doing a load of laundry and when I came up she was gone.” “The back door was open but it’s snowing so hard I can’t see if there are any footprints.”
Front page the next day……. ‘Elderly woman’s body found frozen in chair down by Colsen pond. Several witnesses had reported seeing a woman in a sun dress and straw hat walking barefoot through the snow down highway 46.’
