The children ran around inside the enormous tent like always. No one had arrived yet, but the popcorn was popped, the cotton candy and caramel apples were waiting. Home style chili and french-fries were piping hot and ready to be gobbled up, although they knew they wouldn’t be having any, they wouldn’t if they could.
The year Henry turned eleven, he was a happy child full of smiles and laughter, and his parents adored him. Unfortunately they were both killed in a horrible car accident and that was the day his life changed forever. He was left in the custody of the only family he had, Uncle Mortimer. Henry was devastated; Uncle Mortimer had spent his life working as a clown in Ringo’s traveling Circus. Henry was informed he would now have to help out around the circus with props and cleaning, he was very depressed.
Henry had become a dark child and Mortimer was angered that Henry never smiled. “Listen” he would say, “you can’t be in show business if you don’t smile.” Henry didn’t want to be in show business and he didn’t want to smile. Eventually even the other clowns harassed Henry, they were mean and said things like, “ Smile you little brat or we’ll chop you up for soup” and “If you don’t smile we’re going to hold you down and paint a smile on you, then you will be like us.” Henry would have rather been chopped up in soup than be like them.
Eventually the clowns held Henry down and painted a big smile on his face, put him in a polka dot suit and forced him to perform. That’s how Henry’s career began, he hated every minute of it, he hated smiling kids, he hated his life, but lacking ambition, Henry spent twenty years in the circus before he finally cracked.
Five children wound up missing from the circus and Henry was apprehended when the children’s blood was found on some of his clothing.
Now the children are trapped for eternity in that enormous tent, wishing no one had ate the chili.
