Beneath hay we slept
Under the solace of moon
Stars stayed to keep watch
You beside me like a rock
We were grounded by our love

Beloved friend, the very best times we ever had were the magical times when we needed nothing at all except each other. Sleeping in the open air under a star studded sky like two carefree children, our blanket like freshly cut hay and the long moonbeams our deepest solace. Our needs always seemed so few when we were together. You would sing your beautiful songs to me and we would tell each other stories and adventures in drowsy voices; sometimes our imaginations would run away with us and we would gently tease each other. We knew we were the light of each other’s lives as we stared up at the stars, even though we never really told each other. We always felt safe together as the moon kept watch over our sleeping forms and the chirping of the crickets lulled us to sleep. You beside me like a rock, with just our fingertips touching, warmly hugged by nature. We were grounded by the deep love we had for each other. We always dreamed of changing the world. Together we believed that one day we would. I’m sorry that I never got to tell you all I wanted to say. I know you’re shining down on me from somewhere.

Jane, both the Tanka and the prose convey such a feeling of kinship, love that is timeless. Regardless of this person not ever hearing it all, I am quite sure that all that is as strong as this is conveyed, that it was felt by both equally and immeasurably. A lovely write. Michael
