Nine lives will not be enough
Her mates wait on hot tin roofs
Like quicksilver she slips past me every day, slinking through the periphery of the garden; a sleek hunter, as wild and free as the wind, a restless gypsy with cool gem-green eyes, young, agile and beautiful, magnificent, dressed in nature’s language of liquid perfection. All her senses sizzle with the inexorable, torrid game of mating. Burning lust is the blatant message that she carries with her onto the rooftops at night. On that full moonlit eve I only glimpsed her silhouette against the sky. It was as though the nearby antennae had picked up her signals and had set off a caterwauling amongst a host of would-be suitors, as if they were dancing on hot tin roofs. Anxiety split through the air like an axe. Her back arched like a bow. The tension was tangible. She waited at the chimney stack; her urgent yowling seemed to be directed at the moon. Nine lives would never be enough. The magic of an age old scene captured once again under the direction of Mother Nature and stored like an old movie in the vast archives of the Universe.
