The Big Parade
Detroit to D.C. night train, Capitol, parts East.
Lone young man takes a seat.
And by the rhythm of the rails, reading all his mother’s mail from a city boy in a jungle town postmarked Saigon.
He’ll go live his mother’s dream, join the slowest parade he’ll ever see.
Her weight of sorrows carried long and carried far.
“Take these, Tommy, to The Wall.”
When I saw The Wall myself in my very early 20’s I had to bring a friend who helped me walk, I was crying so hard. I’m a bit more bitter now that I’m older, but it really is one of the most powerful monuments ever created. Though I do know that her Civil Rights Memorial is as powerful.

Thank you for your extremely thoughtful words and for sharing your pain. That song is beautiful and deeply sad. Gave me goosebumps at the end. Yes, it is a most powerful monument and when I’m wondering around downtown, it’s one of those places that I’m drawn to every time, where I find myself sitting on a park bench for long periods, just people watching and reflecting. A very moving experience and a wake up call, to be grateful for the sacrifices made……. every time. Thank you so much for your touching comments.
