One afternoon, I wandered around Quantico National Cemetery, where some of our nation’s military veterans are laid to rest, in Northern Virginia.
What drew me to this particular grave was that it was of a young man (only 23 yrs. old) and he served in Iraq. My heart just sank. Out of curiosity, I looked up his name afterwards and learned that he was among eight Marines from a Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 unit who died when two CH-53E heavy-lift helicopters collided mid-air off the coast of Africa. He was deployed to Djibouti as part of the combined Joint Task Force participating in counter terrorism missions. Millitary investigators blamed the accident on pilot error and officers’ inadequate supervision of the unit.
Come Veterans Day and everyday…this is dedicated to the veterans, for their service and sacrifice for our country. To those who have lost their lives and to those who make it back home safely. I send my thanks, peace, love and comfort to you and your loved ones…Rest in Peace soldier.
