Filigree
A shaft of late afternoon sunlight falling onto a delicate object, how could I not reach for my camera?
This is a Chinese Lantern skeleton, they grow in my garden and are something I go back to photograph again and again.

Ah, you know, I’ve wanted to do something with these for ages, but I’ve never found one of them in as nice condition as this. A lovely thing beautifully captured.
Jan Bickerton replied
See below, I’m still getting used to this site!
Jan Bickerton
Richard, they grow in my garden and are nice and orange at the moment. Over the winter they turn into skeletons and I find them blown into corners in the garden.
If you are ever in the South West give me a shout, I’ll save you some.

This is beautiful, the only b&w of your series, I am curious to see it color.
Jan Bickerton replied
There was no colour, the sun was so bright acting as a backlight that it almost turned the photograph into soot and white wash!
Thank you again Anthony.

Filigree is a perfect description! This is beautiful. I have similar plants in my garden producing these skeleton-like pods. Initially they have an edible berry inside which has hundreds of seeds. I know them as Cape Gooseberries.
Jan Bickerton replied
Yes that’s the same plant, wonderful when they are orange too. Thanks for your compliment.

Thanks again.

welcome to the group, jan. the shadows on the sides which are cutting the negative space up are what are making me unsure; the rest is perfect for the group. i will have the other host make the call on this one. (you can delete these comments if you wish :)
Jan Bickerton replied
I can see that it could be argued that there are two objects of focus here, I’ll await the verdict.

I love this plant; I’ve seen the skeletons around the area where I live, but have never grown it myself. This is one of my favorite images of yours!
Jan Bickerton replied
Thanks Colleen!
It’s a very ordinary looking plant with plain off white flowers, but these paper lanterns are bright orange when new and very delicate in old age!

The lightness and delicacy of this image is beautiful. I feel I will break it if I breathe too hard…and then it will splinter in my throat. I can’t help but react to this photograph and that is what it’s all about for me…interaction between viewer and image. This has it in bucketloads!
Congrats on a well deserved win.

Wow this is so delicate. Lucky you for being able to photograph them at your disposal! I have been looking at these lanterns for some time now and this is one of the nicest captures i have seen :) Well done.
Jan Bickerton replied
Thanks so much for your kind comments Emma. I love them when they become skeletons like this. I find them blowing around the garden. Shame you’re so far away, but if you’d like some, BMail me with your address and I’ll post some up to you. They weigh next to nothing!
Emma Brown
Aw that would be lovely although would they not get crushed in transit? I think I will just have to admire them from a far and possible buy a print in the future :) Or I could buy some from my local supermarket and wait for them to die? haha.
Jan Bickerton replied
I could find a deep box so they wouldn’t get squashed. They won’t be ready until the autumn though.
You could buy a plant at your local garden center, they’re called Physalis, or Cape gooseberry, or Chinese lantern and are easy to grow.
Maria Moro
Well Done!!!
