Photographed in Strasbourg in northeastern France in December, the streets were bustling with the annual Christmas markets (marchés de Noël.) The crowds had begun to overwhelm me, so I turned my eyes to the tranquility above, the magnificent cathedral, flanked by angels…

142 meters tall, the cathedral of Strasbourg is the 6th highest church in the world. The site existed since the late 4th or early 5th century, but the current structure was created between 1176 and 1439. Described by Victor Hugo as a “gigantic and delicate marvel,” this church is considered one of the finest examples of high Gothic architecture.
