Need Some Advice (photographers) by JamieLA

Posted on May 03, 2010

My digital compact camera has about had it and I am trying to buy a new camera, but there are so many CHOICES!
I’ve been looking at Nikon Digital SLR cameras, a couple people have recommended the Nikon D3000, which is also one of the few I’ve found that are close to my price range..
I need suggestions- what do you shoot with and what would you recommend?

    I have a Nikon D90 I am happy with.

I know a lot of people that like the canon rebel
i love my canon 20D, i just wish i had known my nikon film lenses would have worked on a digital- or i would have gone with nikon. (the whole nikon vs canon war is a bit silly to me- ive had both and they are both excellent cameras).
and jamie love- its not the pots and pans that make the cook (trust me I know that metaphor all too well hahahaha)

  • JamieLA:

Hehe.. ahh I have to say I am familiar with that metaphor too ;)
Thank you for your advice!! (and I agree about the Nikon vs. Canon, it is silly)
I ended up getting a Sony A300 off of Craigslist, used, but very slightly. I am very happy with it so far :)

Personally, I think it’s the lens more than the camera but a good lcd preview screen is essential. I have a D Series Nikon and it’s been stolen and recovered already. I wish I had money for longer lenses.

Points to consider; Canon and Nikon have vibration reduction/image stabilization lens. Those lens are pricey because of the technology. Sony and Olympus and Pentax all have DLSR lines and the image stabilization is built into the body, so the lens, the consumer level, lens are less expensive.
The Sony system also allows Minolta lens to be used on the bodies, as well as Pentax allows the use of Pentax lenses on the DLSR bodies.

  • JamieLA:

Thank you for bringing these points to my attention!! I appreciate the advice, I didn’t know this :)

I have an older Canon 20D I got off ebay. I love it. I’ve used nikons in the past and had a love hate relationship with them. But that’s just my opinion.

Similar to rubyjo’s phrase, I use something different that I tell people, “Its not about the camera, its about what’s behind it.”

I know people on here who could take better pictures than me with a cell phone.

  • JamieLA:

Haha.. those cell phone cameras ARE handy..
Thank you for your comment!! I appreciate the input.
I ended up getting a Sony A300 off of craigslist, some lady who used it once and decided it was too complicated.. I am enjoying it though :)

I have the Nikon D5000 and I LOVE it. You really can’t go wrong with it. It’s a great “intro to the DSLR world” camera.

you can get old lovely manual prime lenses quite reasonably for them which helps you to develop your style

if you buy a nikon just make sure it’s one that allows you to use them
