"The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" by

Oil on canvas. 22"X30"

fantasy art, psychedelic, surrealism

My theme is Surrealism and the Landscape. I like to create spontaneous organic imagery (‘biomorphism’) but depicting the landscape and seasons is important to me, as well.

This is from a strange image I get in my mind when I simply read the phrase “the Piper at the Gates of Dawn”, both from the chapter title in my favorite children’s book, “The Wind in the Willows”, as well as the song by the same title by Pink Floyd.

Magical. I like the Pink Floyd connection.

Now that I think about it, “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” was actually the title of Pink Floyd’s (was it their first?) album I believe. I liked their earlier pschedelic music, including “Dark Side of the Moon”. As a teenager, music like prog rock from the late 60’s-early 70’s profoundly effected me for the rest of my life.
I always liked to draw as a child and as a teenager but my skills were limited. In the late 70’s to early 80’s I majored in art in college and developed my skills more but I was directionless. I didn’t start seriously painting until ten years ago.

To a certain extent, the paintings that I do now are basically what I would have liked to have been able to do back when I was a teenager listening to Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Yes.
