James Lindsay Born 1978. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

Resides Ruidoso, New Mexico.

Style?: “I generally work at one end or the other of the realism-abstraction spectrum. Precise realism for the landscapes around me, or abstract expressionism for the landscapes of my mind. I try to communicate the ineffable beauty that is inherent to human existence. Sometimes its the glow of a setting sun, other times its the relationships of colors and form in space. I feel that both styles are relevant to modern life.”

Medium? “My preferred medium is oil on canvas, however I often paint in acrylic on canvas or mixed media.”

Size? “I like to work on a large scale. I think the never ending vistas of the West need to be communicated on a larger scale and abstracts also are better suited to a large scale.”

Other interests? “I enjoy doing things outdoors: skiing, golfing, photography, camping and exploring. I also play the guitar, and love spending time with my wife and two young children.”

Why is art important? “For me art is about peace and a certain understanding. I pursue images which display harmony and visual tranquility. I think that this adds a sort of calming, peaceful element to the spaces that they occupy. By “understading” I mean that element that is communicated in art and understood by the artist and the viewer. Sometimes this understanding is instant and other times it is eventual. It is the connection between the viewer and the artist, the artist and nature. It is a reminder, a soother, a stimulator. Human beings have an inborn ability to receive and communicate this signal which impacts our lives on a myriad of levels.”
