Hang Four (Warning! Potentially offensive image)

Do not view this image if you believe there are some areas that should not be joked about – disability being one of them.

That being said, let me give you the idea behind this potentially offensive design.

I was at the beach the other day and I see this kid with a hang 10 shirt on – one of those old Hawaiian things you used to see around. And it’s got this image of these two footprints, with these cutesy toes. So I think to myself – that’s fine for people with nice feet, but what about the rest of us. What about people with deformed feet?

The concept is about TENACITY and HONESTY.

Imagine if you have all these people with physical deformities who want to have fun like everyone else – so they form a surf club. They don’t have enough toes to hang ten, and they aren’t even co-ordinated enough to stay on their boards most of the time (hence the pic of the guy wiping out). But who cares? They’re there to have fun, and they don’t give a damn about what people think of them.

If you have ever tried to make a ilving doing something you’re passionate about – I think you can relate.

I love the concept and the design is very nicely done. My dad is a triple amputee – since he was only 18 years old (now 81!) Lost his left arm (natural one) and lower part of both limbs. But it never stopped him from doing the things he wanted to do in life – drive a car without all the gizmos, fly a glider, and about 10 years ago began flying ultralight aircraft. So I can relate to your message which is very positive and assuring. Well done.

just my opinion…but i think your designs should be placed as high on the template as possible..

    it just looks better…

so you design tees for a living?

  • James Lillis replied

Hi LostBoy (like Keifer Sutherland style Lost Boy…?)

Okay – yes, I agree with you on this one, I’ve made the image larger and placed it higher, and I do think it looks better. Thanks for the tip.

    dude this is great !
and whgilst being sensitive to disabilities, life is a funny ole game anyhow, and sometimes laughter is all that can be done.
(hope you have a moment to check out my stick figure series, like this one
and you’ll see what a similar idea we both have here.
    :)

Thanks for the comment. Yeah, you do have to laugh. I liked your Jesus. But then again, I just like Jesus.

    Hi Angela

Thanks for the comment. I got the inspiration for this one down at Currumbin beach on the Gold Coast. Everyone’s been super positive so far.
