This pen and ink drawn in my 5 × 8 Canson sketchbook is more detailed than many of my sketches. When I found this buried toward the back of an older book I first looked at it in wonder. Then the day and sketch came back to me.
My morning conducting business was particularly frustrating. By early afternoon I had ‘HAD it’, turned off my phone, got in the car and started to drive. I found myself heading south from my hometown of Tucson. I kept going, waiting for my thoughts to change and calm down. I eventually reached the border town of Nogales, 90 miles and a bit over an hour’s drive. I pulled into a side street and parked. The view in this sketch was before me. I found my pens and sketchbook and began to draw.
It’s a complicated scene with the U.S. border fence with Mexico at the bottom of the street. On the Mexican side are hills covered with houses and shanties. I couldn’t begin to draw them all, so since they’re in the far distance only suggested them. Closer the stone house, power poles and lines, as well as the security cameras on their tower add a lot of texture.
After I don’t know how long the power of concentrating on the drawing had it’s calming affect. I finished it up, put it away and headed for home, getting there in time for supper! (Never miss a meal, James ;~)))

Feel free to VIEW LARGER, though I’m sure 7 years later the border details have changed these begin to show the efforts the U.S. takes to keep the ever surging poverty driven immigrants from getting in. Now this is one of the most controversial and heavily fortified sections of the two thousand long border with Mexico.

I merely edited the scanned sketchbook image on a RB card sized format.

A persona who has apparently lived a relatively long, varied and eclectic life. My Red Bubble portfolios reflect my seeming persona… and IF there’s any veracity to these reflections then some sense of HUMOUR and enjoyment should be PRESENT!

    brilliant sketch James

  • Yes, when I found this I immediately thought of you… telling me to go keep digging in my ‘garden’… of old boxes and books! It took me another week to get around to scanning and loading… but in the mean time I’ve been going through books again… and found some more… AND as soon as the weather cools I’m going to try some new sketches… getting tired of mere photos!
    thanks, friend!

  • Thanks, Adam… yes my sketches are my most spontaneous… and really alive works… and when done in the ‘situation’ also create the best most poignant memories for me!
