Italy- Siena's Duomo, a night sketch by

On our ‘98 trip to Italy Sienna was our first stop… after landing in Rome, taking a train north and an eventual bus ride down winding roads. Finally up the hill to this ancient hilltop city. This pen and ink drawing in my 8″ × 5″ Canson sketchbook is one of my earliest pen and inks.
We’d walked around the twisting streets, finding the main plaza and a meal. As darkness fell, and the weariness of cross Atlantic travel descended I lost all sense of my usual highly attuned sense of direction. In other words I managed to get us very lost in the curving and up and down streets. By the time we’d made our way back to our lodging we were totally exhausted but not, given the time difference, ready for bed. I sat in front of an open pizzeria, that over looked the flood lite Cathedral of Sienna. With my brand new ink pens I didn’t have a clue how to draw the ‘night’… so in a stupor I began to cross hatch… finally giving up to go in and experience the jet lag in our tiny quarters.
It was a total drawing experiment done during insomnia and inexperience.

A persona who has apparently lived a relatively long, varied and eclectic life. My Red Bubble portfolios reflect my seeming persona… and IF there’s any veracity to these reflections then some sense of HUMOUR and enjoyment should be PRESENT!

one of your best too… many more to come James… love the instinctive night cross hatching and your manga type descriptions! can really see your “Trip to Italy” as a pic travel book….you probably know about www. if not check it out

  • I suspect you know… but what a total delight EACH time… when I load another drawing and know that a sensitive and tasteful YOU… will not only leave me a fine comment, but will have actually read and enjoy my usually rambling description.
Yet, in another way I do understand… because I’m taken with these sketches of mine, too. Amazed that they still seem to live… and that the feelings I was having, often quite long ago… are there within me still.
    I don’t know ‘blurb’, I’ll check em out… thanks… dear friend ;-)

Yo James this sketch is great…congrats on your whole portfolio also!

  • thank you Sandro… for visiting here… and the portfolio ;-)))
Art like life is a learning, as you seem to know, and schooling in either can be helpful, though hardly a necessity! I hope you’re painting still…

Amazing sketch – I wish mine would be this good

  • Michelle, YOUR sketches are good… as good as you can draw them RIGHT NOW! What I’ve learned over the past year from my ‘bubbling’ experience is that everyone is doing, creating, presenting the best they have… AND I am encouraged AND INSPIRED by all of this amazing art.
There is much that seems to be beyond my abilities… yet there are very kind comments, like yours, the help me recognize MY abilities… and give me reason to continue to participate… and yes get better!
This is likely all true for you, too! ;-)))

Lovely sketch James! And the writing makes it very special and intriguing!

  • Paulina, thanks for all of your lovely comments and ‘favs’… and yes I too have some great memories of various folks stopping by while I’m sketching and often sharing a ‘gem’ of their own.
