On our ‘98 trip to Italy Sienna was our first stop… after landing in Rome, taking a train north and an eventual bus ride down winding roads. Finally up the hill to this ancient hilltop city. This pen and ink drawing in my 8″ × 5″ Canson sketchbook is one of my earliest pen and inks.
We’d walked around the twisting streets, finding the main plaza and a meal. As darkness fell, and the weariness of cross Atlantic travel descended I lost all sense of my usual highly attuned sense of direction. In other words I managed to get us very lost in the curving and up and down streets. By the time we’d made our way back to our lodging we were totally exhausted but not, given the time difference, ready for bed. I sat in front of an open pizzeria, that over looked the flood lite Cathedral of Sienna. With my brand new ink pens I didn’t have a clue how to draw the ‘night’… so in a stupor I began to cross hatch… finally giving up to go in and experience the jet lag in our tiny quarters.
It was a total drawing experiment done during insomnia and inexperience.
