Now this is a VERY fast drawing. Diane and I had walked across Rome to get to the Vatican City and visit St. Peters. The crowds were huge, but we made our way inside the cathedral.
The enclosed space is huge. The amount of art and decoration mind boggling. The numbers of visitors beyond measure. On top of all that we were exhausted and thirsty. Here I’d arrived inside one of the most famous and studied buildings in the world, and I don’t carry a camera.
Then Diane informs me she has to get ‘out of there’! I can’t let her go without me, we’ll never find each other in these crowds… but I want to attempt a sketch, as imposing and impossible as that seems right then. I convince her to slid into the pew that just emptied next to us and assure her this will be a fast draw. With the weight off her feet she relaxes, slightly. I scribble away, all the milling and moving heads in the foreground. A few of the multitude of columns. Quick versions of the statuary all about. The alter, dome overhead, the lettering… DONE, lets go.
Who ever said art should be studied and easy.
