This pen and ink from Assisi Italy is a detailed drawing where I sat for some unknowable, but long, length of time to draw this image. Diane and I had climbed up the streets from the main plaza to the top of the hill where the historic fortified citadel sat. Parts of it had been restored and were a museum, other parts were in ruins. I found a ‘comfortable stone’ with the best view and settled in to attempt to capture the scene before me. Diane said she’d leave and we’d catch back up with each other at the hotel.
This is the view across parts of the town in the foreground and then another large structure on the next hill and beyond that to other buildings on the receding hills. It was still a morning light, and that Umbrian mistiness we’d noticed before shrouded this view, too. I sat there wondering where and how to begin. Curious if I could even begin to capture what I saw, with my simple four pen sizes. It’s drawn in my Canson 5×8 sketchbook.

A persona who has apparently lived a relatively long, varied and eclectic life. My Red Bubble portfolios reflect my seeming persona… and IF there’s any veracity to these reflections then some sense of HUMOUR and enjoyment should be PRESENT!

I love the details and the light and shade.

  • As I was readying this to load I thought of you, Dave. The stones, the view, the history… you do such a great job presenting all of these… AND, I thought, Dave will probably agree with me… I did okay with them in this sketch, too. Thanks…;-)))

wonderful, so much work and energy it’s a beauty!

  • Oh, thank you Catherine… work and beauty yes… but my butt on that stone seat and my cramped legs are probably why I eventually stopped drawing… I save the unnecessary edges to last for this reason… I think… ;-)))

An amazing drawing James..your attention to detail is stunning..

  • AND my ability to ignore my * while sitting for long periods… BUT one of the best parts is having a partner in Diane who encourage me and at the same time tolerate my getting totally absorbed… and find her own way to enjoy.
