This pen and ink ‘plein-air’ drawing in my Canson 1557 sketchbook is one of my all time favorites. Diane and I had been on our trip for several weeks and my early sketching experiments were beginning to pay off. As we set out to explore the town of Assisi we walked down this side street. Glancing over my shoulder it became clear I could get the church’s duomo aligned and centered in the archway across this narrow street.
We’d worked out our signals, so Diane said she’d walk on ahead and left me squished up against the side wall, (there was auto traffic speeding up and down this street), and I sketched as fast as I could… before I lost track and maybe a knee or leg at the same time. ;-)))
It was a beautiful day, and I added the blue sky in PSE to help define the drawing and set the mood.
This drawing won a ‘top ten’ finish in a challenge in the ‘Retired and Happy’ group May 2010.
