Traveling with a pen and sketchbook and committed to capturing images this way takes some adjustments. First, one must have a very patient and agreeable travel partner, which I do. Second, one must never be too concerned about drawing conditions… or even the eventual quality of the sketch. So it better be something one enjoys doing, and I do.
This pen and ink drawing in my Tru-rite Sketch Diary (one of my very first sketchbooks) 9″×6″ was done in 1998 on a trip to Italy. We stopped for a rest from extensive walking at the Hotel Lungarno on the banks of the Arno. They had a patio with comfortable chairs looking south to the Ponte Vechio. It’s a complicated view which I knew shortly into the drawing would never be very good, but it does capture some essential qualities of this famous bridge.
AS Redbubble adds Product options I’ve made different versions of this sketch, though the card is still the copy from my original sketchbook.
