This is an acrylic painting I did in the early part of this century. I was doing a large housing development project that I believed required me to be nice to customers who were all too frequently inane, often stupid, unkind or way too often just mean spirited. After a day of abuse I came home and looked in the mirror… Ah yes, there was my metal deflection shield. Then I mimicked one of the folks asking me; “And how does it make you feel?”, knowing full well if I told them the truth they burst into tears and/or call me obscene names.
So I painted me behind my ‘shield’ and then opened a few doors so my facial expressions could be seen answering their question. After retirement it took me many years of plastic surgery to remove these business induced devices and just show up as the jerk I naturally am!!!
At the time it was an experiment in capturing the impact of containing my feelings, and as can be expected it caused many sleepless nights of insomnia… as Red Bubble activities do now… but these are happy sleepless times!!!!
