2 mirrors and 4 self portrait images by James Lewis Hamilton

I found this drawing buried in a sketchbook from 1998. I was in a hotel room and still hadn’t dissipated the itch to sketch some more. When I sat on the edge of the bed I realized there were two identical mirrors on either side of the bed… and by adjusting my position I could get the angle of view such as to see myself, front then back, reflecting back into infinity.

I remember enjoying doing this drawing, seeing it as an experiment. As I started to draw the second face I realized I needed my glasses to see it, so as a joke I drew the glasses on only the second face. I also chuckled when my rear view showed my ever growing bald spot, which I don’t usually walk around being aware of. I don’t think self-portraiture is about fixing my self-delusions, rather revealing the distinguishing blemishes I’ve acquired through life.
This was drawn in “tru-rite” 9″×6″ Sketch Diary, labeled as light weight paper for…
Another late night and delayed sleep from my bubbling activities.

This is really neat James..The youngest guy in front looking forlorn not able to talk to his older self. The middle self can communicate with his older self but not his younger self.If lile is this way we should take the back of the oldest self and place it in front of the youngest self. See you’re better then Nornan Rockwell. I have to back to the home now jeff

  • I know… but what keeps me so confused is not only keeping up with all my multiple personalities of this era, and their different age inclinations, BUT really go daft when past life characters want to jump in and read (or re-read as the case may be) their lines in the script!!! Maybe I need to trust the Director more! ; – ))

i a fool , will give you the greatest and most painfull truth- that 76 years taught me it is this jim—-we know all our answers,we need, but we are afraid to ask the questons, because in asking, we have to act , and acting is the scarest part in our lives,we know what we think we want, but we have to move, in that direction-and remain frozen,until- the question, arrives, dumb?simple? in-error-see- yeh?

  • if it’s located here it’s for all to hear… some might say in a view of absolute oneness there’s only uni-sex… so, I think that responds to your question…
