I was waiting for Diane to show up and so drew this pen and ink sketch in the meantime. It was located in the upper west-side of Manhattan. It was a dark interior so it was interesting experimenting with how to illustrate the feel and sense of the place.

I’m reloading many of my NYC sketches to get them to an appropriate pixel size and update the format. In this one I added a small insert from a drawing I did at the bar of Cafe de Arts.
All these sketches were originally drawn in my Canson 5″ × 8″ sketchbook.

A persona who has apparently lived a relatively long, varied and eclectic life. My Red Bubble portfolios reflect my seeming persona… and IF there’s any veracity to these reflections then some sense of HUMOUR and enjoyment should be PRESENT!

    I like this James, congratulations.

  • Thanks Richard, I attempt to capture the spirit of a place when I sketch it… maybe that’s easier in a bar… where they serve spirit(s)… haha

This triggered a memory of that wonderful stale beer aroma that would wif out from under the swinging door. From that forbidden place when I was a little kid in NYC

Bwahah!! I can smell this place!!!!
and hear it…and feel the little bit of beer-stickiness on the bar if I lean on it…BRILLIANT!!!!!!!

  • Maybe one of the advantages with concentrated sketching is that all the smells, motion and everything else, except the sketch, disappears.
HA… ;-))) thanks, always appreciate you, your being there with a supportive comment!

your sketches are wonderful. I enjoy your portfolio.

  • Thank you so much… as I’m sure you know, we artists in fact just do what we do… most (certainly me) have no real clue whether anyone else will connect with what they’re busy doing…. So thank you for looking/connecting/appreciating/complimenting/commenting…

You must be quick on the draw to do work like this. I don’t think it is pencil – looks more like ink …. am I correct?

  • pen and ink… I’m quick… and I don’t allow any self criticism of ANY line… know I can’t erase, nor second guess… just accept every line as part of the perfect whole… move on (is my drawing motto !)
thanks for yer lookin… does your comment mean yer GOOD lookin???
