NYC-French speaking woman on the subway by

Another of the characters riding the New York City subways. She was elegant and the sound of her French, while speaking with a friend, was an interesting contrast to all the other riders. I drew it in my Canson sketchbook being held in my lap… I just keep glancing up and down and all around… concentrated staring not conducive to capturing people studies. ;-))

A persona who has apparently lived a relatively long, varied and eclectic life. My Red Bubble portfolios reflect my seeming persona… and IF there’s any veracity to these reflections then some sense of HUMOUR and enjoyment should be PRESENT!

Mon Dieu! Elle est tres elegante!

  • OUI ! the extent of my high school French classes… but I can always seem to get the gist of what the French are saying. For instance, this lady was traveling the subway with a friend (whose back was to me) and I believe this is a fair account of their comments at the time I was drawing her:
Friend; “I think that man is making a drawing of you.”
Elegante fem; “Oui, but he’ll never capture the scent of my wonderful perfume!”
Friend, laughing; “You could go over and put a dab on his paper.”
Elegante fem; “Mon Dieu! Not at the price I pay for IT!”

haha… I can still sense her scent right now… and it’s not related to olfactory memories… hahaha

I am fascinated by the subway riders in my city…Catch myself many times staring from face to face, as in childhood…..Wish that I had a camera in my eyes to document all the humanity in its many guises that I encounter—that I could download the images at home and just stare to my hearts delight.

Love this woman and the first reply you gave about her perfume….

  • What I appreciate is someone coming upon a work of mine well over a year after even the last comment and not only leaving a thoughtful comment… but also one that introduces me again to my own memories of the sketch… and the comments… all were fun for me… I’ll say more on some of the other replies to you! thanks,
