I have tried to designate the pen and ink drawings from a particular ‘Canson’ sketchbook and trip to NYC with the same color border (in this case a light blue and Nov. of 2000 was the trip.)

On a cold November morning Diane took refuge in a coffee shop while I wandered down Park Avenue to find a composition for a sketch. I walked across to the median, turned and Met Life. Grand Central’s Mercury also held the view that this was the time and place to draw a pen and ink in my Canson sketchbook.
It was cold, Diane remembers our breath coming out like great white clouds of smoke. I worked as fast as I could, tried sketching with my gloves on, and finally gave up before I could detail the left building. After retreating back to the coffee shop (Timothy’s, by the way) I wrote the little poem to fill in the unfinished building’s details.
How I love sketching in NYC! ; – )))

I’m continuing to experiment upgrading these sketches to the new RB card format… and making a few ‘improvements’ in PSE.. NOW in 2013 I’m still playing around, this time making tees and icovers from my sketches.

great perspective and detail!! How about changing the background colour of the presentation to red or another colour sometimes?

  • I have this box with quite a few sketch books in it… sketches like this… usually from trips taken and thus sketches from the same era. I thought to put the same background color behind sketches from the same book and/or era… kinda help (me or you) to organize them in my eventually enlarged profile page.
Do you think that idea makes any sense?

The more I look at this, the more I admire it. There is a really confident feel to the lines. You can see from my own portfolio how much I like pen and ink work and I have a lot of respect for this piece of work. Well done James.

  • Dave, as you may have found out your comment inspired me to go look at your portfolio again… and we are definitely mutual admiration companions!!!
Thanks for your true appraisal of this sketch… and you’re welcome to the glowing true compliments I made toward your fine… very fine…work/ART!!!

I don’t think your PSE troubles are much of an issue… I must admit that your sketch is so good and attractive to my eyes that I dod not pay any attention to the border. Besides, I find the poem filling the empty building on the left absolutely matching with the image, it goes beyond the meaning of the words, it just graphically belongs to that piece and makes most of its originality.

  • What a kind thoughtful comment!!! When I first joined RB I thought so many of the comments were at best vapid and at worst thoughtless… then I had the task to leave my own comments… and the issue of TIME… just how much can I devote to bubbling… and all that? BUT, I did decide to primarily leave thoughtful, or at least mildly humorous comments… the pay off has been huge, as your comment illustrates. Thank you so much… to think a simple sketch can bridge the gap of times and places and not only communicate, but allow replies!!!
I agree the card centering issues aren’t serious… but I find meaning in the details… and doing something right versus carelessly doesn’t take that much longer. It’s just the new RB card format has confused me some… but that’ll clear up eventually… in the mean time I agree it’s not that big an issue. lol
