During the two years of ‘69 to ’71 I worked and taught at a school in the center of the island of Jamaica… and I painted some landscapes and buildings that captured my attention. This view from near the interior town of Christiana I painted with a Jamaica shaped clear blue space in the cloudy sky. The original had three small blue dots to show where I lived or visited friends on the island. (I’ve experimented enhancing the dots on this version) Knox College in the center near Christiana, Montego Bay to the west (left) and Kingston to the east.
It is a latex painting on 16″ × 24″ Masonite board. (1971) Latex house paint is a water soluble material and I always had the paint company’s ‘colorants’ as they use for making different shades in the hardware store to add as needed to my paint.

In 2014 I’ve loaded this onto the full range of RB Products and like the way they look. ;-)))

enchanting James.. I love your Jamaican series…what a wonderful experience it must have been

  • Jamaica for me was exposure to another culture, another view, giving me the opportunity of my life to break from my past and begin to learn to always look beyond and below the surface appearance of things.
Just like my friendship with you brings these same forces for openness into my life… thanks!

Excellent – reminds me of Gauguin works.

  • thanks for the extra compliment Mary… and as I head back to my beach life in Thailand again I’m always reminded of Paul, and his life’s decision to go paint in the tropics.
