This 14″ × 20″ acrylic painting done in May of 2001 is really the first of my ‘acrylic painting portfolio’. I ‘d allowed my business interests and work to consume all my available time and creativity. I’d connected with my partner Diane six years before and she kept after me to paint. I had some oils, but I love water base, fast drying paints from my Jamaica experiences. Finally Diane caught me in a weak moment and we visited an art supply store. A set of acrylic paints, brushes and different canvas sizes came out of that venture.
I’m sure these supplies sat in their bags for weeks until again I was struck with inspiration. There was Diane, sitting on the couch, there was the old painting “Number ONE” on the wall behind her. In about fifteen minutes this paint sketch was complete.
Diane was so thrilled with my interpretation of her, as well as the ease and speed I could move into the “ZONE”, that continual experimentation and painting became a (well) at least a weekly event.
She’s moved past this interpretation, so we’ve hung her in the walk-in closet for only ‘our eyes’.

A persona who has apparently lived a relatively long, varied and eclectic life. My Red Bubble portfolios reflect my seeming persona… and IF there’s any veracity to these reflections then some sense of HUMOUR and enjoyment should be PRESENT!

Love the colour combos, and strong expression james!

  • Thanks, but then I look again and maybe the so called “color fix” at time of “crop” pulled up different accents… but then that can happen with my originals in different lighting, too. For instance, on the right hand side the golden glow is actually thin layers of orange transference acrylic paint that in fact is over the whole background. It makes the figure, in most lights, be surrounded by a golden hue and move out from the background.

if love comes through stronger then art at first, so be it, love and art will soon go hand and hand, as you become. more farmilar with the paint buggers, nice art.let it breath,

  • in breath—-out breath—-in again—-out
I’ll keep this up as long as I can!

lucky man you are James, she is so behind you all the way, have to asked her yet? what are you waiting for???
she is one very interesting women, open yet very private, she has a way with you like no other women, you better hold on to her as she may slip away under your fingers,
what a painting, her eyes are in deep thought though, she has a lot of worries, I hope most of them are behind her, she needs a hug every day and she will grow on you even more…
    LOVE LOVE IT

  • I am lucky, been together 15 years, married 11… we think we’ll ride out this storm together… or go down with the ship holding hands (etc.)
    ;-)

James, thank you for your comments on my work. This portrait is exceptional, so full of character, you can see your feelings for this lovely lady come through in your art. Added to my favourites.

  • Richard, Your comments, coming from an accomplished visual and emotional artist such as yourself, are greatly appreciated.

15 minutes? That’s speedy! I like it, it’s very much alive and vibrant.

  • Fast may have been some internal hesitancy and showed up as get it done before she moves. We’ve like this painting for years, Diane says it reminds her of what she wants to ‘grow into’… maybe that “alive and vibrant” of your comment. She’s all that and more to me.
    Thanks.

Fantastic James…love the lines and flow of colors..she’s a fortunate woman!

  • Sarah, Thanks for the fave etc., since you have now ‘watchlisted’ me, maybe you’d like to go to my ‘profile’ and look at the painting and notes on the one titled “Number One”. Then if you return to this painting you’ll see that one abstracted in the background. Putting it together you’ll see that my early wish for a ‘special woman’ in my life in fact became reality, even if thirty years later! ;-)))
AND, I know that it is ‘I’ who is the fortunate one!
