This 16″ × 20″ oil I painted shortly after I arrived in Jamaica in July 1965. I ended up trading it for a meal and bed at Stacey’s guest house in Montego Bay and that eventually led to me helping Stacey build and run a small art gallery on the beach. Stacey gave it back to me many years later.

Now in 2014, while living on a Thai beach, surrounded by banana trees and bananas, I’ve loaded this to all the Red Bubble product options. I like the way they look! ;-)))

A persona who has apparently lived a relatively long, varied and eclectic life. My Red Bubble portfolios reflect my seeming persona… and IF there’s any veracity to these reflections then some sense of HUMOUR and enjoyment should be PRESENT!

I love this painting james! and what an interesting history it has!

  • Prior to going to Jamaica I knew I had an interest in, a sense of wanting to paint. But it’s Stacey, the guest house operator [who not only had a small interesting collection of paintings (an original but unsigned Jackson Pollack hung in one of the three rooms)], who recognized some talent in me from this painting. I ended up spending two years there, painting on her veranda, reading most of the large variety of books in her library, and helping run the small beach gallery that ended up representing over fifty local artists.
Soon I’ll post a few more of my paintings from this era.
    Thanks for your comment, Anne-marie.

I really like this one James.

  • You are really being so kind and appreciative… This painting is hanging right now just off my right shoulder… when i look at it, it reminds me that I’ve had what talent I do have from the very start. This painting, done at age 21, was a huge learning… and set me up to see compositions similarly even today. There’s a painting of banana leaves like this that I painted in Thailand in the summer of 2008. A friend just sent me a photo of it, so I’ll be loading it too soon. It has the same essential qualities as this earlier work.

James, this is a masterpiece!!!!! Love the composition and all the colors!!!!!

  • I have no idea when you left this fine compliment… and I do agree with you… have this original still hanging at home… and marvel at how long ago it was painted… and showed the promise of what I could do.
    Thanks…;-)))

    XX ANNIE

  • thanks annieannie… always appreciate your comments and thoughts… I did have a picture of the Jackson Pollack… but no more… and years later Stacey told me she gave it away in Jamaica… probably be worth 25 to 100 million to a gallery these days… if they could authenticate it from modern tests on the paint. BUT who knows… not me!
