A Elephant Seal appears to give me the ‘He started it’ look while fighting with another elephant seal, but in reality these 2 elephant seals were really tearing at each other and giving bites to the neck seemed to be the offensive move of the day! Fights between males can be bloody affairs in which the combatants rear up and slam their bodies against each other, slashing with their large canine teeth, but not all confrontations end in battle. Rearing up on their hindquarters, throwing back their heads, showing off the size of their noses and bellowing threats is enough to intimidate most challengers. When battles do occur, it is rarely to the death.
Elephant seals can weigh as much as 3 tons so you don’t want to be in front of one of these guys when they are on the move!
