This wild lone wolf was apparently booted out of his pack for some type of ‘wolf reason’ and has been spotted a few times roaming the Kootenay’s. During the winter months when food was hard to find he was spotted near the road many times looking for an easy meal and this is where I was lucky enough to spot him one early morning. Worried that he might get hit by passing vehicles, rangers finally coaxed him into returning to the backcountry with some well placed deer carcasses. Last update I heard is that he has banded together with a couple of other wolves and is on his way to forming his own pack. Kootenay National Park, British Columbia, Canada

What a wonderful shot of a beautiful lone Timber Wolf making its way through its natural snowy environment. It is interesting to note how the wolf’s color blends in nicely with the landscape. : )

  • Thanks Sandy…I thought the colors on this wolf were rather unusual since one typically see wolves with greyish-white or black coats. The colors on this wolf were awesome.

Yes, the reds in the coat are not as common for sure! The coastal wolves are much redder in coat, but are genetically isolated from the inland wolves. They don’t grow as dense a coat as the inland wolves either, which is interesting to know! I would be in heaven to see a wolf in the wild! I heard a lone wolf howling in Yellowstone, but didn’t get to see one. Perhaps on an future visit I might get lucky! : )
