Lone Wolf - Kootenay National Park by

This wild lone wolf was apparently booted out of his pack for some type of ‘wolf reason’ and has been spotted a few times roaming the Kootenay’s. During the winter months when food was hard to find the wolf was spotted near the road many times looking for an easy meal and this is where I was lucky enough to spot him one early morning. Worried that he might get hit by passing vehicles, Park Rangers finally coaxed him into returning to the backcountry with some well placed deer carcasses. Last update I heard is that the wolf has banded together with a couple of other wolves and is on his way to forming his own pack. Another update november 2011…this wolf has been spotted numerous times along the Kootenay River with other wolves…good to see the wolf is strong and banded together with other wolves, Kootenay National Park, British Columbia, Canada

Great capture James !!! I have read that some of these lone wolves leave the pack on their own (called Defectors ) seeking breeding rights, leader status etc. and often are either adopted by a new pack or establish a new one of their own.
  • Thanks Ray. This wolf has been seen with other wolves…looks good to have a wolf pack back in the Kootenay’s…keep those Rams and Moose on the alert! Thanks for the comment…much appreciated! would love to get some lynx pics like the ones you got…good stuff!
