On the fifth of September the Geelong Rams played a fantastic game of Rugby Union at the Flinders Peak Reserve in Corio, beating the Monash University team in an exciting semi-final, 36 – 5.
Justin (Juzzy) Bullen pictured here goes on to set up a Try. The improvement and team work of this 2009 team has been inspiring throughout the season. The Forwards’ scrums have become a powerful weapon, as have the tricky and decisive play of the Backs who are arguably the best in the current competition.
Geelong Rams play in the Division 2 competition of Victorian Rugby Union, unable to move into the Premier competitions because of VRU rules that state that a club must have an A and B team in the seniors competition. Geelong just doesn’t have the numbers to front two senior teams, although they have been an official club since the early 1950’s and comprise of and Under 18’s and and Under 16’s team this year (previous years have also had Under 14’s).
The coming weekend (12th September) will see the team’s first Grand Final apearance in five years. They will go in as the slim favourites against the Endeavour Hills A team who are known for their larger players but lack of disipline.
Disipline could indeed be the decising factor in this Grand Final match. The Rams will need to keep their heads and play the skillful game they have become known (and feared) for!
